Default Putting DVDs on my iPod

I just bought a new iPod Touch (32gb) and would like to put some of my kids DVDs on there. This will come in very handy when mommy and daddy want to watch a movie and he can watch his show on that.

I have done a quick google search on this, and have realized that there are a ton of different programs I can use to convert my DVDs to my iPod. I was hoping someone here would have some experience with this and be able to lend some advice. I don't mind buying some software for this if it is going to work better than the free versions.

If the mods think this topic encourages illegal behavior then they are welcome to delete this thread. However, I would like to remind everyone that I am interested in converting DVDs that I have already purchased and place them onto my iPod using legitimate (not pirated) software. I believe everything here is on the "up and up".

You're not doing anything illegal... yet. The proposed copyright reform will likely outlaw what you're doing with your own, purchased DVDs. So ripping to an iPod, media server, etc. will make you a criminal just because you want to watch 1990s technology on a device from the 2000s. But that's another can of worms.

I use DVD Fab decrypter to rip the DVD to your computer. It is free for the decrypter. I believe that you can pay for a full version that will do your conversion too.

I wouldn't worry too much. There's a program called Handbrake that will take the DVD image and convert it to all sorts of different formats. It has presets for the various types of iPods.

Those two programs, both free, are all that I have ever needed.

I'm moving all my DVDs to m4v this month so I can watch them on the iPad.

I have Handbrake running almost non-stop on both the Mac and PC. Though some of the commercial DVDs I had to use MacTheRipper on before encoding with Handbrake.

Is there a free PC equivalent to MacTheRipper (remove copy protection, extract DVD to hard drive)?

It's a pain in the butt that I can move all my CD's to my iPad easily, but can't move the DVDs that I personally own to the iPad. Doesn't logic dictate that it's the same thing? Or is it that the horse is already out of the barn for CD's but if there was any way the entertainment industry could get it back in.....

DVD Decrypter

I have not used it in a while, since I really need an all in one solution, for which I moved to One Click DVD Converter that actually works really well. I paid $30 for it, since I bought a copy of OneClick DVD Copy many years ago. There is also an ipod only version that is 10 bucks less.

Except Videora's current version (5.04) is bugged and no fix has yet been made.

Plus, Red Kawa doesn't have earlier versions available for download until the issues are resolved.

They've been annoyingly mum about the issue, too.

If you're doing this on a Mac, and your ripping protected DVDs...

MacTheRipper is your friend.

The killer combination on the PC is Slysoft AnyDVD with Handbrake.

AnyDVD decrypts your DVD on the fly - no more time wasted ripping to the hard drive before encryption, just point Handbrake directly at the TS_VIDEO folder and have at it. If you are batching up a bunch of encodes and want to copy it to your hard drive, just drag and drop in Windows Explorer - there’s no interface to deal with, it just works in the background invisibly.

Highly, highly, highly recommended. Between myself and a neighbour, who never buys software until he saw this thing in action, we’ve ripped hundreds and hundreds of DVD’s with no issues. They also update the app super-often to keep up with evolving b@stardizations of the DVD format.

That is because you have VLC installed - it’s a requirement to use protected DVD’s, since Handbrake does not include the libdecss library or whatever its called that does decryption.

MacTheRipper + Handbrake was how I did it. When I went through the process Handbrake wasn't as strong as it was now, so I'd go that route to start out with.

If you're totally anal like me go here for all your movie cover art needs:

Just remember to select the right option when using Handbrake, I ended up converting 3 seasons of "The Sopranos" just to find out that it doesn't save my choice from last time and couldn't sync them to my ipod

Oh, looks like I've been out of the game for a while. I had no idea Handbrake decrypted now (using external tools, of course). Good stuff!

What, what, what? If you have VLC media player installed, Handbrake will decrypt too?

Nice - that takes that extra step out of the equation. Or at least automates it.

There was a time handbrake also wouldn't let you set up a group of files. God that was painful. You still have to queue them up one by one now (giant pain in the ass), but it's better than nothing.

That is the one thing I really dislike about Handbrake.

It wouldn't take much to build a script to do an entire folder automagically though.

DVD Decrypter is still a very useful program even to this day. However, after its original designers were shut down, no improvements on the software have been made for years. Newer encryption methods actually best DVD Decrypter now, making some DVD's unrippable using it. Three examples I know of the top of my head:

WALL-E
The Dark Knight
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Nevermind, I found a work-around.
