Quick U.S. Customs question

I haven't been to the US with my "wife" in a long time, Last time was in 2003 when we got engaged. Now we are heading down to the states again. I just had a quick customs question. Not being married, just common law. Can we go through customs together or do we have to go through separately?

Last time we went through separately and I got sent to secondary for like 45mins and the wife had to sit and wait on the other side not knowing if I was even going to make the flight.

If you live together you can go together. I did last week both ways when travelling with my non-common law girlfriend that I live with.

I think that's because you can fill out the same cards if you're from one household.

I've had it go both ways, once I was told to go with her, another time they made us go seperatly as living together wasn't enough.

I'm sure if you both go together It'd be fine. Worse thing that can happen is they'll make you go back thru seperatly.

We're not officially married in Canada so common law applies to us and before we got our Nexxus passes we always went through together. Different last names, but never a problem or even a hint at one.

I went to the US with my girlfriend last month. On the way down we went to the same customs agent without question. On the way back we split up at Canadian customs since she had to claim a bunch of duty I made her bring back for me.

I got a buddy who tried cocaine for the first time when he happened to have $4000 cash in his pocket. So he bought $3000 worth of cocaine and drove to Utah. When he hit the border they asked him if he had anything to claim and high as a kite he says "yeah, theres a bag of about three grand worth of cocaine on the passenger seat."

They just laugh and waive him through, even though the bag was right there on the seat. Same thing coming back.
