Default Home Saunas

Any feedback on these? They claim several health benefits but I am most interested in overall pain relief as I work a physical job that takes its toll on the body.

I am looking at the infra-red style, and there are several on craigslist for under $1500. Are there certain types/brands to avoid?

My family is Finnish. Don't get a home sauna unless it's a genuine one. Rocks and water. Go with that electric crap and it's not worth the time.

My parents have one, but they built it from scratch. I'll tell you one thing, okay two things:

1. They're awesome.

2. The rock and water heaters are hard to come by and replacement parts are a bitch.

3. They're awesome.

Yeah, yeah, thats 3 things.

You probably also don't think it's worth your time unless all of your immediate relatives are nude and packed in there with you.

I used to use the sauna every single day of my life until I was 18 and moved out from my parents (ok, maybe 1 or 2 day in the year there was some reason why we didn't get it warm). God I miss that. That place is sacred to us. And probably you don't even now what real sauna is until you visit Finland, nothing like that stingy feeling when the hot steam first burns you for the first time.

And nothing like that burning feeling when you fall on your back to the Kiuas piss drunk and get the word Narvi tattooed on your back for a while. (I speak from experience). Or when you run piss drunk to the hole cut in frozen lake and injure your leg in a manner that it looks more like egplant than human feet ( I speak from experience)

And the smell when you have visited the smoke sauna and smell like smoked salmon for 3 days. (Well maybe women do)

When I move out of this studio I'm definitely getting a place with sauna. That cures everything. And will probably get me even more seriously injured.

And yes, people here will go to sauna with all family included, until kids are roughly 11-12 years old. Then it's divided between men and women.

what? It's water poured on rocks in an enclosed room. We're not splitting the atom here.

i would not want to make a decision for this purchase based on price alone.

also have you considered adding any additional venting to your house to allow for the extra warm/moist air?

Its not as easy as you think, you have to size the ventilation perfectly and get the right size of kiuas in a certain size of sauna. The height of the benches (lauteet) is important also. The type of rock matter too. In smoke sauna the quality of the löylöy depends on what wood you burn.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3218892

But maybe the most important thing for a good sauna experience is the amount of water that you throw in the stones, I have found out that most of the foreigners call getting a tiny bit of steam from the rocks with the sauna temperatures of 50-70 °C "taking a sauna"
