wranglers David Shantz article

Quote:
Suffering from minor-league burnout, a disillusioned goalie flew across the globe last summer to volunteer in the African archipelago of Zanzibar.

Call it a vision quest, of sorts, for a young man in search of a new game plan for life.

“I just needed to clear my head a little bit,” says David Shantz, a second-round selection of the Florida Panthers in the 2004 NHL entry draft. “I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do — with anything.”

Ten months later, Shantz finds himself as the No. 1 goalie in the Calgary Flames’ farm system.

Pretty cool, but the article makes it sound like he's already a part of the organization. Technically he's up for grabs by anyone. Hopefully he gets a contract with the big team this summer, I've liked him ever since he won that 'historic' shootout for Fleury.

Very composed young man. Great to see. That bodes extremely well for character, and it's going to serve him well no matter where he goes or what he does.

Shantz sounds like a great guy and I hope he ends up with a contract with the Flames.

If not, I'm content with him being the goalie who made Fleury's 1st game back one of the most memorable moments of his career for me. But I think Shantz can achieve so much more here.

I thought he was the strongest of the prospect goaltenders at training camp last year, and was happy that the Flames offered him the ECHL deal. If Toskala bolts & Shantz makes a strong showing at camp next year, (assuming he's re-signed) I could see him contending for the backup position.

I posted this in another thread but other than volunteering to teach English in Africa, Playfair said Shantz rides his bicycle to practise and picks up garbage on the way. Andrew Ference 2.0, it is good to have stand-up, character guys like that.
