Default Extending Wireless Network

I'm looking at extending the range of a wireless network. I need to reach a house about 5 doors down. Has anybody used wireless repeaters? I was looking at this model http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...546&CatId=4026

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

That seems like kind of an expensive range extender, but I guess a super powerful one is necessary to reach 5 doors down?

Are you interested in sharing a single internet connection, or are you looking to connect the two homes together network-wise? A VPN solution between wired connections is the way to go if you are looking to do the latter.

Wireless repeaters will halve your bandwidth between sites, that’s something to keep in mind if you decide to implement that solution.

that is a nice piece of gear. to me, it looks like it would sniff and rebroadcast any available open wi-fi signals...like if you were close to a starbucks and wanted to surf on their network at home but didn't want to go in and buy a coffee whenever you wanted the internet. nice stuff!

i haven't used this network device before but it does look like it will do the job.

You can't run cable along the fence or anything like that?

These work very well in this type of application.

PM me if you want Canadian pricing and availablity.

I should ask a couple questions;

What kind of throughput do you want?

Is there any LoS issues?

No, there's a street in the way.

1) Ummm, no idea.
2) Assuming that means line of sight, no, not really. If I go for the repeater option I could have it in an upstairs room which would allow for line of sight, and no cement in the way. I've looked at the antennas, but wiring it from the router downstairs to somewhere outside might be an issue.

Without a lot of backstory, I'm looking to share a single internet connection. It doesn't require (and in fact I would prefer it not) networking the two homes. The second home will pretty much only need it for email and web surfing. No major downloads, torrents, gaming, etc.
