Default Downer songs

What do you listen to when you're bummed out? This is where music can be a very personal thing as you can't argue what someone feels listening to a song, even if the intended subject matter conflicts with how you interpret it. ("Under the bridge", and "Hurt" are two popular examples.)

For me the easy one to connect to are the ones played during a powerful movie (please don't reference Titanic ). I love "Magnolia" and the montage where they play Aimee Mann's "Save Me" as it really punctuates the scene. "The Bluest Eyes in Texas" played at the end of "Boys don't Cry" by Nina Persson and "Philadelphia" by Neil Young are others.

Other than that, off the top of my head, the Alice In Chains unplugged album is great Downer Rock. (I thought I was making that term up until it was pointed out to me that it was the moniker for Black Sabbaths' music years ago)

are these supposed to be songs which uplift us and bring us out of our downer or song to slit your wrists too?

If it's the latter then I'd go with a medley of Smiths songs (Girlfriend in a Coma, Last Night I dreamt that Somebody Loved Me, How Soon is Now, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now)...or anything by Radiohead. Morrissey is a depressing man but he doesn't hold a candle to Radiohead.

Almost anything by Elliot Smith. No wonder that guy killed himself.

So true. My favorites though are the songs that kind of sound cheery, until you listen to the lyrics. Baby Britain comes to mind.

John Frusciante's album The Empyrean

I dont know that it falls into the "slit your rist" genre, but its deep and powerful....turn the lights down and crank the volume!

Try Fallin by Asher Roth. Has to be one of the most underrated songs of 2009.
Whenever I listen to it, always brings a smile to my face for some reason.

Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt". Game, set, match. Rest of ya got nothin'. Best piece of popular music ever recorded, period.
