A Scanner Darkly by Philip K Dick. Its a drug novel published in 1977, but set in a near future setting (1994 at time of publication).

I found the final chapters and the author's afterword to be particularly moving.

[Hack&Lube]

The movie version with Keanu Reeves is interesting but the art style grates on you after awhile
