Default Quick Question: Trasfering Vehicle Registration

I know I can Google this, and I did, but I want to make sure I get it right. I've purchased a new (to me) vehicle and I've transferred my insurance over to it and stuck my plates on it...

Is there a grace period before I have to transfer my registration? Am I legally allowed to drive it right now?

Thanks.

Awesome, thanks. I thought I remembered hearing that at some point but I didn't want to risk it.

Just make sure you have your bill of sale on you and only the registered owner(assuming it's you) drives the car while you are driving on your old registration.

Insurance may not be transferred, depending on who you are insured through. Beware.

You have 14 days to transfer the registration.

Some insurance companies are finicky on transerring insurance. Call the insurance company when you have your bill of sale. Call the insurance company and give them all of the new information. They will fax a temporary proof of insurance to the dealership and you can grab it and drive away.

Yeah, I'm with Meloche Monnex. They emailed me my temporary pink slip already.

If you go outside the grace period, say 2 months, what happens then?

You are driving without registration and you get a nice big ticket and your car gets a ride to the impound lot!

Perfect! I have a buddy who thought the insurance was 14 days grace as well. He got his new (to him) truck towed (separate parking issue) and couldn't get it out, as he had no proof of insurance. It was a mess.
