I don't think I've ever seen that tactic.

I like the argument about using a taser. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldnt a cop have to get close enough to the man to potentially be stabbed before they could taser him properly?
Right now is not the best time to p*ss off the cops. The dumbass got what he deserved.

Dumbass got what he deserved there.
The TASER/stun-gun arguement is one that is questionable because in order for them to work properly the officers need to be within 15 feet or 4.5 meters of the individual with the weapon. I know that it doesn't take much time to cover that amount of ground so that is likely why a TASER would not be used in the situation. Also it mentioned that the guy wasn't responding and there are some times where individuals who are high on narcotics wouldn't be phased by the TASER and would still in effect be a risk to themselves and the community.

The idiot got what he deserved! Why would anyone feel sorry at all for jerks like this? Hes lucky he can still walk. Arrogant shinguarde.
The Police should be able to do whatever it takes to get these brain deads off the street where he wouldve created a bigger problem.

I don't know much about police technology, but, I would think, since they were handling the situation for a while (as stated by the news clip) and the fact that they knew they were being filmed, why would they throw out the rule book?
15' isn't far, and not all police officers have them/are trained (as per interview during news clip).
Frankly if you do that, you get what you deserve.
Buddy of mine a few years back saw a guy arguing with a cop in downtown Halifax. To this day he regrets not standing close enough to hear exactly what the drunk was saying, so he'd know NEVER to say that. Cop took his billy club and beat the shinguard out of the drunk.
Use your head, if the cop says "put the knife down" put it down, if the cop says "get in a cab and go home you drunk" get in the cab and go home (or to another bar )

This is where one of those beanbag shotgun loads would have subdued the guy nicely.... right at the jewels......

This was a perfect situation to use the taser. Similar to the situation in lethbridge where a man with a knife didn't give up and they ended up shooting him dead. This is why tasers are now used... specifically for these situations. Dumb, really dumb.

BlackArcher do you really want to put yourself in harms way. Tasers while they are a great idea, they are not failsafe and there is possibility that they wouldn't work on the individual in question. The police did what they had to do in this situation

Would you be saying the same thing if they ended up seriously injuring him or killing him?
Tasers work and were made for this situation. To not even try using them is wrong. Why even carry them then?
You make is sound like you need to be standing within an arms distance from the guy to use the taser. You don't have to stand that close in order to use it, which leaves you out of the knifes reach.

Yeah I would be saying the same thing, you want to step within 5 meters of a deranged man with a knife, I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to.

I know I am supposed to be the intolerant right wing guy, but I think the cops went over the line. Ramming the guy with your car and wedging him between the parking meter was over the line.
the guy was just walking around. If 5 cops can't subdue him normally without ramming him 2x with a car, they are not very clever.
Cops are to serve and protect, even the lowest of the low.
I don't think cops should have the right to 'do whatever it takes' that is a police state. Taser the guy, tackle him whatever, but that seemed lame.

The guy had a coat and a hoodie on. Wouldnt that somewhat dull the effects of the tazer?

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is on another computer, verify that you are connected to the network. If you typed a path, verify that it is correct. If the problem persists, the server might not be available.
Sorry to interject a little lack of nerdy skills, but that is what I get when I click on the link, do the "save target", go directly to the news stations website, et cetera.
Anyone got a hint as to how to deal with such a thing?

Maybe if he would have dropped the knife in the first place, he wouldn't have gotten himself in such a predicament where the cops had to pin him between a car and a parking meter. Friggin morons!!
