Default Engine light on, gas cap was off a week ago...

Left a gas cap off my car trying to go North on Highway 2 during that freak snowstorm, and didn't notice it was off until I hit Airdrie. My gas cap was put back on, just wondering if this would cause the check engine light to go on. Did the diagnostic and it was showing P442 and P455 (both of which can turn on when the gas cap is loose)

Anyone know if this can be caused a week later? Thanks!

Absolutely. Just give it time and it will go away.

Your owners manual should have the steps to reset it. My friend's Volvo does this all the time.

Tighten it up and then if you want the light off immediately disconnect the battery for 10 minutes.

I didn't tighten my gas cap when I first purchased my car and the light would not shut off by itself. Go to Auto Value and they'll run a diagnostics, and reset it for you, for free.

Sorry I worded it really weirdly, I actually took it off and put it back on last week in the same day. So it's been on for a week. Just wondering if some air built up in the system. Either way, thanks for the advice, I hit the Auto Value, and they ran a diagnostic on my car and it showed no problems.

They performed a reset, but my light went back on. I received advice to just put a new cap, if that doesn't work it might be a "cage" over my gas cap is loose or off...I'm thinking the car is fine, the cap was probably frozen over somewhat in the snowstorm being outside and is not responding with the sensors. I was also told to put a small hose in to see if it's the cage, just to make sure it wasn't moved. Either way I believe if there was a serious leak wouldn't it have shown up in the diagnostic? That's what they told me and what I've heard...any secondary advice would be great. Thanks again CP!
