Default Buying Electronics in US

What s the duty for bringing electronics back from the US ?? If any.

I'm currently in Missouri for work and am still in the market for a Home Theatre reciever.

There's a Circuit City right down the street and they have some good sales going on right now.

For example:

As well as Best Buy.

I realize the warranty would be a problem if something happened but for the savings it may be worth the risk.

I just don't want to have to give all my savings to the border guard when I get back.

Thoughts ?????

Well first thought is the duty free exemption that Canadians get.

If you are out of Canada for 24hrs you can claim $50 CAN duty free, 48hrs $400 CAN, 7 days $750 CAN

If it's made outside of North America (a good assumption for electronics) it's usually between 3-7%. Plus taxes if you're over your exepmtion.

The same model is $699 at Crutchfield canada.

Circuit City?? They went out of business 6 months ago. Are you sure that store is still open? I know they sold off their name to a web sales only company, but I didn't think that there were any store left.

Right now I'm about an hour west of St. Louis. About halfway between there and Columbia along I-70.

Off to Circuit City tomorrow to check out the deals. It may be worth paying duty if I can get a steal of a deal....

Maybe a nice 5.1 Receiver on clearance......

Good sales because the new receivers are coming out and they are priced fairly good. The new receivers I've seen, (Onkyo and Pioneer) even the entry models, are 3d and HD audio compliant, so keep that in mind if you might ever have a use for it, otherwise I can't tell a good receiver from a poor one and this Sony may just fit you perfectly.

Just make sure you compare prices between the US and Canada. I am in both places lots, but have ended up buying several things up here because it was just flat out cheaper here.

The one I linked was just an example.

I'm hoping to find something on a clearance rack and get a great deal.

However I got called into work today so I made money instead of spending it.

Maybe tomorrow.....

Just bought something online from Texas and the duty costed me 12 dollars.

I hear if you declare it as a gift that you pay nothing but don't quote me.
