BC camping

Looking to go camping over May long weekend in BC. Problem is, not too familiar with the campsites in that area. Would be nice to be somewhere near the water to let the dogs rip around, and near the mountains preferably. Will be going out with my girlfriend and a few other couples. Anyone know of some good places?

BC is quite a big area....you're going to have to elaborate as to where you're looking.

Kootenay Lake.

Theres lots of camping on the west side of the lake but if you go to a place called Woodburry Resort and Marina it's really nice. There is permanant sites where people keep there trailers all year round, then there is sites with full hookups for trailers and lastly there is tent camp sites right on the shores of the lake. There is also a resteraunt on site and boat rentals if your big into fishing.

Ainsworth hotsprings is just up the road to, which is a pretty neat hot springs. A lot more unique then most of the "hot pools" these days. Not to mention, you get to drive your car onto a boat to go accross the lake to get to these places.

B.C. Forestry Site.

(Means NO COST, unless the Ranger comes by, then it's like $8 per night)



Bluey Lake.

Near Merrit, Great Place, usually not very populated as access road as classified as "4wd". This is not really the case, I wouldn't try a compact car, But a van or truck will have no problem.

The beauty about this place is the seclusion, I've been many times in the summer and often you'll have the whole place to yourself.

Just to let you know though, starting April 1st you will be able to book specific BC Parks campsites online (not just the campground but the site you want). Fees are going up though and in some places will be $30/night.

Be prepared for fire bans though, could be a very dry year.

$30 bucks a night!!???,,,,, The average "Blue Collar" used to be able to enjoy:

-Drinking.

-Going to Hockey Games.

-Smoking?.

-Going Camping/Fishing.

-......And even playing the Lottery!!!

Slightly off topic but is there anything more useless than a camping trip during a fire ban?

Now that my camping buddies are getting older and kids are being brought into the mix I'm seeing more and more trailers being used. As this happens more groups can't get into the heavily treed areas (or "awesome areas" as I commonly refer to them).

Last year we hit upon a gold mine. We were in Penticton and in desperate need. We were at the saddest little campground you've ever seen right next to a highway. My brother in law got tired of it and went scouting for a new location. He found one and told us to saddle up and get moving. When we arrived it was intensely beautiful. This was our site:

Years ago I had a spectacular camp site on one of the Gulf Islands, next to the water and able to watch the boats and ships pass. I had to make a couple of trips packing everything in but well worth it.

First thing I thought when I saw that picture...looks like my neck of the woods. The house next door to me and accross the street are both vacant, both have nice views of the Lake and I won't tell if your camping in their back yards.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I suppose I should be a little more specific.

I live in Calgary, so not looking for an 8-hr drive. Something within 4 hours would be preferential.

There's a campground in Golden right next to the Kicking Horse River. It's OK, but prepare to get woken up by trains every half hour all night log. That screeching noise they make in the curves is unholy.

If you're willing to drive a little further, maybe check out Radium or Lake Windermere.
