John Krasinski has read for the part of Captain America four times, and is doing screen tests, an inside source at Marvel tells Fox News. The source adds: "He has screen tested 2 times so far. It's very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week." And these decision-makers are having Krasinski test opposite various actresses, so they can lock in the other key roles once the lead is cast. Adds the source, a comics fan who works at Marvel: "It's a surprise and we are bracing ourselves for 'that guy from 'The Office'' to land Captain America. They are not really looking at the other guys, so it's time to get ready to work with him."
I wonder if on new episodes of the office we will see a more buff Jim. Bring on the Maguire and A-Rod helpers.

i read about this possibility a couple weeks ago. Apparently the reason they like him is his '50's "aww shucks" type look and charm about him. Jensen Ackles of Supernatural was the other front runner but seeing this I guess that's gone away.
The guy I thought should have been considered for the role is Ryan McPartlin, aka Captain Awesome from Chuck.
Still, I remember being upset when I heard Michael Keaton was going to be Batman, and he pulled it off.

I thought Robert Downy Jr. was an absolutely horrible choice to play Ironman. He pulled it off (and I didn't even like the movie).
It seems like an odd choice to play a super hero... but admittedly, I'm not a comic book guru nor do I know much about Captain America other than the basics.

I always thought RDJ was perfect for Tony Stark....

Downey Jr is a good enough actor that the risk was worth giving him Iron Man. The same can't be said for Krasinski, who has only been in the Office and several bombed comedies.

Fair enough. I think my initial reaction when I heard about Downey Jr. being selected was that I didn't know he had straightened his life out, rather than his acting skills. I believe I predicted on-set drama, delays and eventually another trip to rehab. I'm glad that didn't happen.
The problem for Krasinski in my mind is that his performance is going to have to be better than other candidates to overcome semi-typecasting. People associate him with Jim's role only (goofy, love-struck, corny, funny). He's really going to have to deliver to make people forget about that.

Even if he hadn't totally cleaned up his life, that was part of what would have made him perfect for Tony Stark since Stark's kryptonite is actually rampant alcoholism. I'm surprised they didn't go into it much in the first movie.
