Default What are these on Deerfoot Trail?

On Deerfoot trail, south of Anderson Rd, there are all these little side ramps that have steel barriers on either end of them. They are short little stretches of road... perhaps 30 to 40 yds long. You particularly see them beside the cement brick wall of the Douglasdale and McKenzie communities.

What the heck are they used for?

I always assumed they would be used by the police and/or tow trucks as a place to park and, uh, wait. I can't say I have ever seen them used though, and I spend more time on that stretch of Deerfoot than I care to admit.

I think they are used for landscaping and maintenance vehicles.

They are pullouts for maintenance vehicles.

Never seen a maintenance vehicle parked there in all the years I've been driving the Deerfoot.

Is that so they don't accidentally make more little baby maintenance vehicles?

It's so they can make baby vehicles without the risk of getting plowed into by an inattentive driver.

I believe there is some kind of water main along Deerfoot. Those pullouts are for maintenance vehicles, but there are main valves in those locations.

Something along those lines. Some kind of maintenance accesses to a system underneath anyway.
