USB devices uninstalling

I have a Dell Optiplex 330 running windows xp that I recently did a reinstall on. Since then USB mouse and Wacom tablet keep uninstalling themselves. Like you will be using them and randomly one or both of them will stop working. Unplugging and plugging them back in will reinstall, but clearly this is not an ideal solution. I assumed it was the drivers for the USB controller, but the ones I found didn't fix it but were a couple years old.

Anyone have any suggestions?

edit: The mouse is a Dell USb mouse, and is installed with the default drivers in Windows

What happens if you disable the USB 2.0 hub? (USB 1.x will still work)

Have you checked system event viewer?

there must be some resource allocation error to cause this since it works then boots out out rather than not working at all
