This has happened to me twice in the few weeks and I'm annoyed.
You know how you sometimes find those Safeway carts in the parking lot so you grab it. Have you ever returned one to the dispenser and no quarter comes out? No biggie; you didn't pay for it anyway.
Well, twice now I've given someone a quarter for a cart and when I return it to the dispenser no quarter comes out.
How the heck do these guys get a cart out of the dispenser without putting a quarter in? I'm not even commenting on the ethics of selling a cart to someone when you know they can't get their quarter back, just how the $%*@ they get the cart out without putting the quarter in.
I saw a lady at superstore using a washer to get a cart out. It was ridiculous, she had to try a bunch of different carts before she got one that it would work on.
Its worse at superstore. Its why I dont use a cart anymore.

I used to work retail in a mall in Vancouver. There was a guy who took carts left in the parking lot by all the stores and shuffle them all off to the northeast parkade (which is across a busy street), and then (try to) sell them back to the individual stores.
We went over to call him out on it one day, he almost hit my boss with his truck..

If people weren't too f'ing lazy to push the cart the 50 feet from their vehicle to the corral, this wouldn't be a problem. Pet peeve, big time. Same assclowns who drive around the lot for ten minutes so they won't have to walk 100 metres.
Also, I can't believe that people are ripping you off for a quarter. Sweet tundrin' jaysus.

A quick thinking ass like myself would have shoved a cart infront of his truck as he tried that.

My guess is that plyers would get that quarter out pretty easily. It doesn't seem to be in there very securely, and I have also seen a quarter fall out going over the bumpy parking lot.
That being said, if I have a cart without a quarter/loonie in it and somebody offers to buy it from me, I'm not going to take their money. It happened to me in Superstore- guy gave me a cart without a loonie, then I gave it to somebody when I was done. Pay it forward in a weird sort of way.
Why do people need to stuff a washer in there? If you go to customer service, they will give you a quarter to use the cart.
The idea of the quarter is to keep the carts from disappearing, not to make money. The carts are much more expensive to replace, so I don't blame Safeway for doing that. But I don't understand people trying to get a cart without putting money in. You get your money back when you plug the thing back in.
I took a cart from a guy once and offered my quarter to him but he didn't take it. So I came up 25 cents richer! And you're 50 cents poorer, so maybe next time i'm at safeway it will happen to me again and the world will be in perfect harmony.

I knew a guy like that to. He made a killing doing that at a mall in the Maritimes - he was a hell of a guy, drove around in a modified go kart.
NSFW.

Completely unrelated, but I once had this old guy follow me out of the store and to my car. He stood there staring at me while I unloaded and then when I finally looked at him he pipes up "Wanna give me your buggy?". I told him to hold on a minute and then when I had 3 bags still in the cart he grabs the handle and says "okay". I snapped at him in the most pleasant way I could think of and told him the cart was $0.25. He buggered off and harassed other people for their carts.
Simple decency and manners is all I ask. A simple "please" and a little patience is I require.

I was at superstore, unloading my items onto the conveyor at check-out.
#1 Peeve: The Woman in front of me didn't put the "stick" behind her stuff, I had to do it.
#2 Peeve: The guy behind me, thought he was doing me a favour by putting the "stick" behind my stuff for me, trouble was, I still had about 10 items left to put on the conveyor.
He started loading his stuff on and I just grabed the stick and bulldozed his stuff to the back. a few of his items hit the floor and I just looked at him with eyebrows raised! (Body language for: "Idiot!") and uttered the F word and patiently waited my turn to pay for my stuff.
I don't understand the cart charging thing at all really. But, if it only costs a quarter to get your hands on a cart, does that really eliminate stealing them? Almost anyone can come up with a quarter, right? What's the real point of this?
