Apple bans screen shields and cases with sheilds from their stores.
This is so weird, Apple's banning all screen protectors and any case that includes a screen protector from their stores.
Were there maybe some shields that degraded the touch screen, so they're banning all of them? Or they just don't like the implication that their products aren't indestructible?

Weird. I put a matte screen protector on my iPhone shortly after I got it and it's been on ever since, without issue.

If you put a scratch gaurd on the screen you won't be back as quickly for a replacement.

Odd. I can't imagine having a touch/phone without some form of protection for the screen. Even my ipods have a case that protects the screen.

Actually I don't have one for my phone's screen, I find that the screens are actually very durable, it's the rest of the thing that scratches easily.

What a strange decision. I do prefer the feel and use of the screen sans protection. Yes that is suggestive and no I'm not re-writing it. I had a screen on my 3g and didn't really like what it did to the feel/look so I went without a screen on my 3gs. I've had it for almost a year now and it looks as new as the day I got it.
Most people aren't as safe as I am though, so it's a peculiar move. I guess I shouldn't question the balls-out craziness of apple. Let's keep in mind this is just items being sold through their store ... You should still be able to pick them up elsewhere.

My touch had a screen protector for the first year and a half I owned it. Never got a scratch. The last one fell off a couple months ago and the thing is horribly scratched now.

Not surprising as Apple's business model seems to want the user to replace their I products every couple of years. The quicker the I product wears out, the faster a person needs a replacement.

Anytime I've known somebody to have a screen problem Apple has fixed it for them though. Again, it's just through apple that they're not selling them and they only make up a small fraction of the retail market. This kind of move won't make a dent in the number of replacements needed because people will just buy them elsewhere.

My phone doesn't have a screen protector. I really didn't like the feel of it. Not as smooth as the screen by itself.
My iPod Touch didn't have any sort of case or screen protector on it for over a year. The back of the thing had a ton of scratches on it, being chrome, but the screen was fine after daily use for a year.

I'm curious about how some of you guys who roll without a screen protector treat your phones. I always put a Zagg invisible (fully body) shield on mine, and then carry it around in my jeans pocket. I keep my coins and keys in my opposite pocket.
The reason I bring this up (and I can't believe the timing of this thread) is that I just got a replacement phone from Rogers. I'd forgotten how nice the screen feels without a protector on it, and I'm wondering if I can get by with leaving the screen portion of my new Invisible Shield off? I can't be one of those guys who wraps their phone up in a down-filled blanket before putting it down on a table somewhere... so do you guys without a screen protector just use your phones normally (ie: just drop it down on a table or toss it in your pocket or on the car seat, etc)?

I've owned several Smart Phones over the years. Never used a screen protector.
I just do exactly what you do. Put it in it's own pocket and ensure there are no metal objects in there with it. On older phones I noticed the paint would wear off and some minor body wear after a couple of years. With newer phones I only see very minor chipping in the pain around the edges and teh screen holds up fine. Maybe a minor scratch but that is really only a cosmetic thing.
So its really a question of how important the cosmetics of teh phone are to you. As far as function, most phones should hold up fine for 2-3 years (the length of a typical cell phone contract) without a screen protector.

On my iPod I had it without a screen for a few days and I sometimes have keys and coins in the same pocket and it makes it scratch really easily. I could care less about the body but the screen is pretty important.
I bought this cheap $5 for 2 screen pack off ebay and it works awesome. It feels just like the normal screen (a little more slippery which is better IMO). Now I don't really care what happens to it because it's pretty well protected.

Ya as long as you don't put keys, coins or anything else in a pocket with it the screen seems to hold up fine. I keep mine in a silicon case (iSkin Revo2) but without a screen protector. I find the outer shell helps if (when) it gets dropped and the added padding keeps the screen from being a point of contact if it falls face-first.

There are definitely some very small surface scratches on my unprotected iPod Touch. None of them are visible when the thing is turned on, so I don't care.
As for the back, I'm almost liking the burnished/patina look that its developing - it gives the device some street cred, like a vintage guitar where you can see the wear from playing (not those faux vintage guitars you can buy - that's just wrong, besides being visible fake). Two or three scratches look bad. A thousand small ones looks OK.

Is it me or is Apple getting more and more arbitrary with things it does and doesn't allow?
Sexual apps, minimal function apps, and now screen shields. They just randomly dropped on the hammer on all three of those.

My iPhone screen is scratch free after 2 years. I keep it in a pocket by itself and try to avoid putting it face down or putting things on top of it. So I don't think I would ever pick up a screen shield anyways. However, while my screen is scratch free, it is not crack free. Dropping if face down on concrete will ensure that. A screen shield would have done nothing. A case might have helped.

I wondering if they are doing this because they dont want to have to be responsible for any defects etc or people who buy these thinking its a license to do anything and then there becomes a scratch and they complain to apple.
