What is St. Patrick's Day, anyway?
What the hell is this holiday? I'm not Irish, I'm Scottish, and I have the colour red on my tartan, not green. Why should I celebrate the birthday of a wife-beating leprechaun (what I always picture St. Patrick's Day meaning as)?
Seriously, what is the story behind this holiday? Is it really just to go out and get fall-down drunk?

St. Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland.
They're a pretty heavily Catholic bunch over there, so they celbrate his feast day (there are a lot of saints, there are a lot of "Feast of St. Whoever").
How it turned into a big Broo Ha Ha? I'm not sure, but I'm sure it has something to do with the Irish loving the booze as much as they love The Church.
Also, it has nothing to do with snakes.

It's like when there's a Hockey Game on.
Or:
When It's Friday.
When it's Saturday.
When it's Sunday.
When you have Company over.
When you had a bad Day.
When it's really hot out.
When you're on vacation.
When you celebrate the Holidays.
When you've just finished cutting the lawn.
When you're still alive and have a fully functioning Body.

It started with some religious thing, and now thankfully its turned into a reason to go out, drink too much and get in fights.
God bless this day.

It's true that description makes it sound fail. Every time I've celebrated Robbie Burns day with my friend and his uber-Scottish dad, we just go to the bar, get hammered on scotch, and listen to him give drunken speeches. Always makes for an entertaining night.

The article I read yesterday said Scotland, but from a little reasearch, it sounds like it's up for debate.

PATRICK, SAINT, the celebrated Apostle of Ireland, was born near the town of Dumbarton, in the west of Scotland, about the year 372 of the Christian era
In his sixteenth year, up to which time he had remained with his father, he was taken prisoner, along with his two sisters, on the occasion of an incursion of the Irish, and carried over a captive to Ireland. Here he was reduced to a state of slavery,
