				 Car Broken Into

Ok so on my way to school this morning I noticed that there was a lovely redish-brown brick on the front sea of my car with glass all around it. Then I noticed that my passenger window was smashed....likely with said brick. Im filing the police report now and its asking for property damage amount, anyone know how much a front passenger automatic window goes for these days?

Depends. Anywhere from $75-200. I'd say $150 would be a good middle of the road estimate.

Mine was $500, but I think most cars should be significantly less than that.

Flip, front windows are significantly cheaper than side windows. I've seen windows cost up to $900 for those small third windows on Mustangs.

When you're filling out the report, just take a guess. Put something like "Passenger window glas ~$400".
Chances are your insurance company isn't going to just cut you a cheque, they'll send you to a glass shop and pay them, so it's really not that big a deal if you get the estimate even in the ballpark on the police report.

well it seems I have a $500 deductible for glass, so unless they had smashed pretty much all my windows I have to pay for it myself. F***ing insurance

That's how mine was too. $500 repair, $500 deductible. If they'd done less damage I could have saved money, or if they'd done more damage I would have at least felt like I got something for my insurance payments. As is, it's just frustrating.

I paid about $200 for my passenger side window a few years ago when I unsuccessfully tried to break into my own car to retrieve the keys that I had locked in there. Got the keys though. Driving to the glass shop with my window gone while it was -20 sure was embarrassing.

I had the same thing happen about a year ago around 8th and 8th. Damn druggies. It was in a "secure" parkade, but it's my own fault for leaving a backpack in the car. Lesson learnt- NEVER leave anything in the car. Since then, I've never left anything in the car worth more than 2 bucks. Always put stuff in the trunk.
Because you found a brick in the car, the cops are supposed to attend and gather evidence. I found a hatchet in my car when it was broken into. You'd think whoever did it would have kept the hatchet, it was a pretty good one. Cops took it, but obviously nothing is ever going to come of it.

I had my backpack in the car taken, and an ipod, 2 sets of earbuds, but that was about it. My school stuff that was inside the bag was left behind. That was very lucky, because I was doing a project where I had the only copy of the data in the bag.

Had the glass replaced by the afternoon, and the insurance company paid for the whole thing I think. Maybe I have different coverage.

Check to see if your insurance information is still in your car.
I have heard about groups that break into cars to specifically steal the insurance card for identity theft purposes.

Well, you can get $100 deductable insurance- but expect it to cost you a lot more per month.

Keep in mind what insurance is for- to pay for losses you cannot afford to cover on your own. Also keep in mind the cost of filing a claim with your insurance company. Somebody has to do all that paperwork- I can see a basic claim costing a couple of hundred dollars- possibly more.

I've been in your situation- and it does suck. I just think the frustration is misplaced.

Don't forget to make sure any EasyPay / SpeedPass fuel tags you have are still there. That's one of the first things they look for, its as good as cash.

Not really sure as it hasnt happened to me, I keep my insurance in my wallet now after I heard about it.

I would assume call your insurer and have them reissue you a new card and new policy number?
