Default Calgary curling leagues 2009/2010

So I recently got the notice from my curling league for this seasons registration. I remember some people were interested in getting into curling (thanks to the Brier), so I thought I'd put the information out there and see who is interested.

The league is "Ninth End Mixed Curling Club" and plays out of the Inglewood Curling Club. We play at 9:30pm on Fridays, starting on October 16, so those with a regular Friday nightlife may not be too interested. Mixed teams, all play levels welcome. The executive mixes the teams up every season (only two people usually allowed to register on the same team), with the goal of keeping arranged teams of 4 from dominating every year. Last year we only had 9 teams out of a possible 12, so hopefully we can get some more people out. If you are interested or have any questions, PM me and I'll get the information to you.

Also, if you are in another league that has openings post them here. I'm interested in getting into one or two more leagues this season, and I'm sure other locations/times will appeal to people as well.

Hmm... if I have a potential team of 4 that wants to sign up, would that be allowed? I highly doubt we would dominate... one guy with experience and 3 rookies.

I'll play with a team, preferably as an extra/5th when needed. I've curled for 15 years, competitive until after juniors. now just hit up men's bonspiels around southern alberta with the boys.

Last year we had a team formed from a whole family, so it's possible. I'll shoot the executive an email about it.

We can always use more spares. Usually a few people missing every week, and sometimes its hard to find an extra, even with a phone list. PM me your email and I'll send the form.

Looks like the league want registration forms in by the end of this week, if possible. Anyone else interested?

Too bad it's Friday nights. I'd totally do this if it were say, Tuesday or Wednesday.

I got some curling questions, and didn't think a new thread was necessary.

Is it possible to get ice sporadically throughout the winter without joining a league? I've called around to a few rinks but they seem to have bonspeils on most weekends meaning public can't play.
Can you rent brooms and sliders?
Is 6 guys (3 a side) enough to have a casual game, or should make sure to have teams of 4?

Ice rental probably depends on the club. Most clubs will run leagues more or less every night during the week and bonspiels on many weekends, but often there will be sheets open. I would guess that the Calgary Curling Club is probably the busiest in the city, but even they have ice on most weekday evenings. Someplace like Huntington Hills or the Acadia Rec Center might have more times available on the weekends.

6 is enough (even for competitive games - first two players on the team throw three rocks each, the other player throws the last two). You only have one person sweeping, but that isn't a big problem.
