Default PVR purchase

We recently had Shaw bring in a PVR thing ( I am very technical) for a 3 month trial. We liked the recording and HD, and have decided to purchase.

The Shaw technician told us if we decide we like it, to buy one somewhere else. Thought that was odd from a company loyalty stand, but whatever.

Any suggestions on where would be a good place, or type of unit to purchase?

Me, I would just walk into Best buy or Future shop and let them sell me the first one they pull out. Is there anything I need to know before walking in there?

Thanks from my 12th century mind,
Aeneas

I got mine directly from Shaw, and got them to give it to me for free, so I don't know what he's talking about.

If you are willing to be a little aggressive with Shaw, call them up, tell them that Bell is offering you a free HDPVR to sign a contract with them and you are considering. Ask them whether they can give you a similar offer. At the very least you should be able to get a substantial discount. You can't do that a BestBuy or Future Shop though, since they'll happily sell you either.

Can you sign a contract with Shaw? I assumed they didn't give free/discounted PVR's away because there was no contract to recover the cost.

I have the new TelusTV and it's really good...

They give you a "free" HDPVR (mine was free until I wanted a better one) for a rental. The only thing is, if you don't stay on for 3 years you have to pay the penalty fee... so if that is a concern, stay away from that. I think you can go month to month if you buy the box from them though- just another option if you don't hate Telus.

No contracts at all with Shaw yet the still give away a TON of free stuff. They will give you cable, a new modem if your old one dies, remotes, digital boxes, etc....

Currently I have a PVR sitting in my basement from them that I have yet to pay a dime for. I'm sure they will call one day but even then, pretty sure I'll get if for next to nothing or at least a steep discount.

A lot of people seem to have a hate on for Shaw and I don't really get why. I find them to be more than fair. They will make mistakes from time to time but who doesn't?

Isn't the HD pvr from Telus a single tuner? both my coworkers have it and it's only a single tuner, which would make it worse than a VCR! hehe

too bad they are both stuck in their contracts for at least another 10 months.

This thread motivated me to call Shaw with onetwo_threefour's empty threat of going to Bell. Sure enough, they gave me a sweet deal. A bunch of free channels and a free HDPVR for 6 months with the option to buy for $250 at the end of the 6 months.

Telus upgraded their system in my area. Tomorrow I should be able to record 3 shows at the same time. Also, I am able to have two HD TV's and one standard def TV in my house. I hope it's 3 HD shows that I will be able to record at once.
Edit: The PVR will be accessible to all the TV's in the house. I will find that out shortly if its true.

Yep, that was my offer too. I'm holding out hope that they totally forget about me but even if they do remember, $250 is still a sweet price.

lol that would be nice! Just watch that they aren't charging you rent now. She said if I didn't buy it they'd charge me rent at $19.95/month.

I called shaw a few months ago to see if I could haggle a new pvr. They said no and I went on my merry way. It wasn't until I decided to cancel my cable the following week that the gears started turning. If you ask to cancel your service (not just give "what if" scenarios) they'll send you to a dedicated team who's job it is to throw free stuff at you. My bill was nearly cut in half.

Telus TV is NOT single tuner anymore.

They have a new platform out, which means you can watch or record up to 3 things at a time, but only 2 of them can be in HD. Or something like this... all I know is that when my gf can watch her trash TV while I tape delay the Flames getting spanked, it is good.

Oh and the new Telus platform is superfast, not sure if that is the new box or what.

Basically, since I got the upgraded TV last month, TelusTV is awesome.

I got may Shaw Direct (Star Choice) PVR for $100 cheaper at Visions than through Shaw Direct.

Got my upgrade yesterday. I like how I can record from any TV in the house.

I like Shaw too.

In the last 2 months I have returned 2 PVR's for brand new ones......no reciepts,no questions asked.

For $10 they did a service call and wired a new outlet.

Would like to see more HD channels but otherwise no complaints.
