Default IOC not happy with Canadian women's ice hockey gold celebration

http://www.ctvolympics.ca/hockey/new...game+behaviour

Quote:
Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for an impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada's underage players..............
IOC may need to remove the stick up their butt.

What if alcohol spilled on the ice damages it for the next team; like the Canadian men's team?

IOC should be upset, and the women's team should appologize.

"The members of Team Canada apologize if their on-ice celebrations, after fans had left the building, have offended anyone," the statement read.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"If that's the case, that is not good," he said. "It is not what we want to see. "I don't think it's a good promotion of sport values. If they celebrate in the changing room, that's one thing, but not in public."

I don't understand. If the public have left the building, then it is no longer celebrating in public. It's not like they went into the streets and started doing beer funnels.

Would anyone even know about it if it weren't reported in the media?

The mentioning of the celebration afterwards is just an excuse for the IOCto release the statement that it could drop women's hockey.

Should the team have exercised more discipline with media still around - sure... however anyone who's been involved in championship games would have done similar things.

I find the IOC statements to be in the most unfairness of competition.
Instead of saying we may drop the sport if competition doesn't improve - why doesn't the IOC work with the other countries to get more women involved in the sport.

I guess men's hockey should've been dropped due to Canada's dominance the first 20 years it was in the Olympics...

http://proicehockey.about.com/od/oly...ictimeline.htm
  • 1924:
  • The first Olympic Winter Games are held in Chamonix, France. The Canadian hockey team wins all five of its games, outscoring opponents 110-3.
  • 1932:
  • Needing a win or a tie to secure another gold medal, Canada plays the United States to a draw in a marathon final game. The match is called after three scoreless overtime periods.
  • 1936:
  • After four consecutive gold medals and a 20 straight victories, Canada loses to Great Britain and finishes second. Ten of the 12 British players live in Canada, including goaltender Jimmy Foster, who allows three goals in eight games.
1948:
  • Canada and Czechoslovakia finish with identical 7-0-1 records, with Canada winning the gold medal on total goals scored: 64-62.
Shame on the IOC

I can't say I have a problem with them drinking and celebrating on the ice after the big win, but the flag with the golden maple leaf was too far. If the Americans beat us and came out with gold stars on their flag I'm sure we'd think that was mighty arogant.

How can Jon Montgomery drink out of a pitcher of beer in an area not licenced (the arena where the girls drank is licenced) and in front of tv cameras, on the air being interviewed and he's seen as a hero and everyone says how awesome it was. But the girls do it in an empty arena and they are criticized. Unbelievable.

If they had done it in the dressing room, or in a bar downtown or even at the olymipc village, nobody would have batted an eyelash. In a word, tacky.

I'm going to take off the Canadian blinders and say that's not an appropriate Olympic celebration. In the locker, bar, private venue, etc. fine but on the Olympic ice it's low class and like a poster said, they look like trailer trash. What would you all think if the US men's team won the gold over Canada and pulled that stunt with Kesler skating around on the Olympic ice surface with a beer and cigar, holding a modded US flag with gold?

I agree, keep it in locker room. Not that I think it warrants IOC getting involved, but I think it should go without saying it is inappropriate behavior.

I can't say I blame them though, this is a once and a life time opportunity to celebrate and relax on home ice. HOME ICE. That will never happen again for any of these girls, as players. But that doesn't make it right.

Not the environment to be doing this type of thing. The cigars are totally over the top, and does not flatter these girls at all. Keep this type of thing away from the Olympic competitive area. This would not be OK in the NHL, so it certainly shouldn't be tolerated in an Olympic Venue.

Arrogant, trashy and classless.

And isn't GM Place a non-smoking venue? They should have been fined for breaking the law!

100% agree. Seriously, who thought that was a good idea? You don't even see this in the NHL.

I too will take off the Canadian blinders then and say that Jon Montgomery celebrating by drinking beer on tv while being interviewed and while walking in an unlicenced area is completely uncalled for. Terrible of him and these girls to train for so long and then accomplish their goal and celebrate harmlessly.

How long were they in those pads for? I mean the warm-up, the whole game, the entire medal celebration for all three teams (medals, flowers, repeat) and then an on-ice celebration? I usually can't wait to get the damn things off after a game.

Secondhand smoke isn't harmless.

Yikes, I can understand being a bit miffed at the girls for smoking and drinking at center ice with a modded flag. But was what Montgomery did really that bad? Having a champagne celebration after achieving the single greatest thing in your professional career is not that big of a deal to me. So what if his choice of bubbly was beer.
