Default Huge Drug Bust in Calgary Resulting in 190 Charges

http://newsroom.calgary.ca/news/oper...in-190-charges

Quote:
The Calgary Police Service District 1 and the Drug Unit have completed a five week operation resulting in 190 charges.
Quote:
During the operation, officers obtained 34.6 grams of marijuana, 14.4 grams of crack cocaine, 3.5 grams of powder cocaine and 2.1 grams of methamphetamine.
This is pathetic.

Sounds like they were specifically targeting small time dealers in the downtown core. Good on the CPS, I appreciate their efforts.

I know the point was to get the actual dealers, which they were successful at, so the amounts don't matter, but still. That's like enough drugs for one house party, lol.

Geez, they could have gone to a decent white collar Stampede Party and rounded up more than this, and it wouldn't have taken no five weeks.

My thoughts on the amount of time and money spent on policing and prosecuting drug related crimes is well established in the last bust thread so obviously I agree with all of you, however, I wonder if we might be reading this wrong...

'During the operation, officers obtained 34.6 grams of marijuana, 14.4 grams of crack cocaine, 3.5 grams of powder cocaine and 2.1 grams of methamphetamine.'

Might this mean the officers bought or somehow obtained those amounts through the operation, and those weren't the amounts seized overall?

It would change the story anyway, even this seems a bit too ridiculous to believe.

If the initial take here IS what truly happened, this is almost something you'd wanna write the city about. But maybe we're not reading this correctly.

I'm not even sure how you'd get 190 charges from those small amounts.

^^^^^^

Eh, probably shouldn't put that on a public forum. Especially with cops who read and participate here.

No way the cops would undersell the amount of drugs they took. They'd be claiming every spec. 50 some grams of drugs are now off the streets, with an estimated street value of $280 million.

I would agree, I just mean this is the initial report, the evidence of the charges. Maybe the seizure isn't fully in yet.

Usually there's money too. Why no mention of that?

Just seems really weird. Even if you expect the worst, or don't really agree with the 'war on drugs'.

I could be wrong, for sure. I'm just wondering if those amounts were the evidence, not the seizure.

Lol no they seized that much drugs. I know more than a few guys who have more than that on them right this second. Truly a pathetic investigation.

Guaranteed these were small time street level guys downtown. The amounts seized were almost surely the result of undercover purchases. Rack up a few charges for each sale (possession, possession for purpose of trafficking, trafficking, possibly fleeing police / resisting arrest) times however many people they caught = awesome use of resources.

As many people stated those totals won't even make for a decent bachelor party

With no evidence or facts to back it up I actually think this was just a harassment exercise by the police to "clean up" the east village in time for Summer. Get the homeless drug users to spread out to elsewhere in the city

Yeah, this really seems like a massive waste of resources. Hrm. Now that I think about it. I wonder if it was just community policing where they were instructed to actually press charges instead of letting people walk on simple possession (i.e. not more resources, just more paperwork).
