Default Majority of Canadians shoot left Americans shoot right

Not sure if this has been posted already

"According to sales figures from stick manufacturers, a majority of Canadian hockey players shoot left-handed, and a majority of American players shoot right-handed. No reason is known for this disparity, which cuts across all age groups and has persisted for decades."

It’s Not Political, but More Canadians Are Lefties
The New York Times
By JEFF Z. KLEIN
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — What is the difference between a Canadian and an American? The old question is coming up again here at the Olympics, with answers involving eagerness for war, ketchup, the pronunciation of toque or the ability to identify poutine and the Tragically Hip.

But none may be so simple as how one holds a hockey stick. According to sales figures from stick manufacturers, a majority of Canadian hockey players shoot left-handed, and a majority of American players shoot right-handed. No reason is known for this disparity, which cuts across all age groups and has persisted for decades..........

Correction: the majority of sticks sold in the US are right-handed, and the majority of sticks sold in Canada are left-handed.

I'm assuming it's just because people can be taught to shoot either way. I shoot left, bat left, but golf right.

It's all because of Gretzky and the Titan hockey stick.

I wonder if the age you learned to play hockey has anything to do with it, if you learned to golf or play baseball before hockey for example.

This is it exactly. If you bat right in baseball before you play hockey you are almost definitely going to shoot right as you have been accustomed to having your left hand as your anchor hand.

I've heard most right-handed people shoot left, and most left-handed people shoot right as well.

But I agree, it's all how you are taught growing up. I am right-handed and also shoot right, I was seven years old before I actually realized there were two ways of holding a hockey stick. I learned to shoot right and that was it.

I have a wicked wrister now and I think it's because my dominant hand is on the bottom of the shaft. Yes that sounds disgusting

It definitely has to do with learning baseball before hockey and vice versa. Shooting left in hockey is natural, while batting (and golfing) right is also natural. I believe most Europeans shoot left in hockey.

I know people that shoot right that haven't played baseball, so no it doesn't have anything to do about learning baseball before hockey

it may sounds nice and fluffy but it doesn't make it true

most americans pick up hockey at a later age. since most are right handed, parents (most who have never played) will buy the kid a right handed stick. the kid is then forced to be 'right handed', without actually testing out both.

i grew up left handed, but being asian, my parents tried to force me to be right handed. it worked until junior high when i stared using my left hand for things. now, i draw with my right, write with my left. i am ambidextrous in sports. even now, i have trouble figuring out left and right (like when giving/receiving directions).

i think golfers are right handed, because left handed clubs are so hard to find. i wonder what the stats are for goalies.

for the record, i shoot left

Well, obviously it's not a 100% hard and fast rule. Nothing is. There's people in Europe who shoot right as well who don't even know what baseball is.

sounds like baseball has nothing to do with it then, it's just a convenient rule when it fits as long as we ignore when it doesn't

For myself i think it just came down to which tools were more assessable for me as a child (all but the bat). My childhood hero shot right but a left handed stick was what was available, and that is what I learned on then.

I shoot left, golf left, bat left but throw and write right

I'm the same as you, except I throw a football with my left hand and a baseball with my right.

I didn't just make up the theory...

When he was associate coach at Tampa Bay, Craig Ramsay told a reporter that if you hand someone a heavy object, he will grab it with his dominant hand. Hand him a hockey stick, and he will grab it with the same hand – and on the ice, that hand will hold the top of the stick, Ramsay said.

What's that about?

For us whiteys we get the whole "it's the devil that makes you left handed, so into the coal cellar you go until you can shuck corn with your right hand" but I don't know the Asian thing.
