Default I don't really appreciate the music of NIN

What do you guys think? People always tell me how great and amazing Trent Reznor is, but I just don't see it. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like he just writes the same song over and over again, and there really doesn't appear to be that much to them.

Is it because he writes the music for every instrument himself? Because really, it's not like there's much to each instrument. I'd rather have an amazing musician playing each instrument in a band than one guy who is decent at each instrument.

Meh, they found a sound that works for them and they just repeat it over and over. Like Nickelback, but different.

Yeah I agree, they really are like Nickleback in that sense when you think about it.

NIN is incredibly overrated. It's like their fans have been brainwashed because I don't have any other explanation for people thinking they're the greatest thing ever.

Nickelback is a good comparison except Nickelback isn't insanely pretentious.

I can't say I'm a fan of NIN's music. I can't even say I'm familiar enough to weigh in on it.

However, I have much respect for Trent Reznor's view of the music industry.

Except he's just ripping off other people's opinions and thoughts to make himself seem like he's on the cutting edge. But he's not. He's just a poser.

Why didn't you make this thread while flip was still around? This would have been a sure fire way to get him banned.

Anyway yeah I agree strongly, I don't see the appeal. But than again I don't really enjoy the genre of music as a whole so I'm far from a good judge. I'm sure some people feel the same about Radiohead and Thom Yorke, they just "don't get it" but I'm a huge Radiohead fan so I can see the other side of the coin as well.

I hurt myself today by listening to NIN. Seriously, the only people who listen to this drivel probably don't even know the difference between 12 and 13. Just ######s who won't even make the cut on Jersey Shore.

So what if someone thought of some of the distribution methods, etc first? Does that make his position on it any more or less valid? A good idea is a good idea no matter who came up with it first.

Bruce Springsteen's born in the USA was (apparently) the first music CD ever released in America. Does that make everyone else that ever released something on CD a poser cause they're ripping off Bruce's thoughts that CD was a good medium to release music on?

I've never heard Springsteen running around, like a chicken with it's head cut off, telling everyone how cool and innovative he is because of how he's distributing his music.

Did you not like Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt". NIN isn't for everyone, I'm not a fan but I can still appreciate what he does. Music and different artists can be weird that way and if you happen "to get" a band like that it can be pretty cool especially when you go see them live in a smaller venue.

I bought In Rainbows just to support the distribution idea. I ended up really liking it. Not huge on any other Radiohead I've listened to.

Was In Rainbows a step in a different direction that most Radiohead fans likely hated and I just liked it because it was pop for the masses?

I'd rather listen to Lady GaGa than NIN. I mean she is really, really talented. Writes her own stuff too!

Reznor is musical genius, I would put him right up there with Bowie in the songwriting department. The sonic artistry is another thing altogether, one of the most incredible musicians of the 90s.

The Fragile is actually my favorite relase of his, have listened to those albums countless time. Brilliant.

Me too. I hadn't heard a single Radiohead album prior to that.

In Rainbows is a different direction musically, but not lyrically. I've really enjoyed everything they have done since OK Computer, and warming to the first 2 ones, which seem to be 'cookie-cutter' record company type ones to me.

That having been said, I enjoy some of the NIN, they are great in concert. But I too wonder what the hysteria is about generally.
