Default Olympic fun facts, courtesy of Wikipedia

Vancouver bid for the 1976 Winter Games, but lost badly. When Denver bitched out on hosting, the IOC offered the games to Whistler. When they used a recent election as an excuse not to host, the games went to Innsbruck.

McDonalds offered a promotion in 1984 that gave away Bic Macs when the Americans won gold, fries if they won silver and cokes if they won bronze. Thanks to the Soviet boycott of the games, Americans went ape-shat in the medal standings, and McDonalds lost money. The Simpsons parodied this. I will personally spit in every 50th Krusty Burger!

Speaking of McDonalds, Ronald MacDonald competed for Canada in the 1904 Marathon

The New Zealand All-Blacks toured South Africa in 1976, which pissed off numerous African countries. When the IOC refused their demands to ban New Zealand from the 1976 Olympics, 28 African nations boycotted the Montreal Games.

Canada first competed at the 1900 Summer Olympics. George Orton won our first gold medal, in the 2500m steeplechase.

Figure Skating was the first winter sport in the Games, first being competed in the 1908 Summer Games. Hockey was added in 1920 after Antwerp refused to host figure skating unless hockey was also added to the program. Yay Belgium!

CODA made four attempts to win the games for Calgary. After losing in bids for 1964 and 1968, we looked certain to win for 1972 until environmentalists ruined it all. Damn Hippies.

Upset at the chosen location of the Calgary Olympic Coliseum, Victoria Park residents threatened to oppose Calgary's bid for 1988 to the IOC. Faced with delays caused by unending arguments and threats of legal action, Ralph Klein finally short-circuited the entire mess by dumping it all in the province's lap.

Canada's medal haul has grown dramatically since the Calgary Games.

Anyone know why people in Vic Park were against the Saddledome?

The Stampede Grounds were already a scenic parking lot and the Corral, Big Four and all the other Stampede stuff was already there. It's not like they were tearing down a bird sanctuary and an orphanage to build a hockey rink.

I don't mean to sound like a snot (even though I know I will) but wasn't Victoria Park a rundown neighbourhood long before the Saddledome? And by rundown I mean abandoned houses, hookers and crime? It seems kind of weird to me that they'd mount a protest that could put something like the Olympics in jeopardy.

Same as every other neighbourhood that opposes anything - traffic concerns and NIMBYism.

Harder to run brothel in the shadow of an Olympic venue?

I get that and I'd understand a big stink if they wanted to build it in Mount Royal where some bigshots with the ability to fight it live, but wasn't Vic Park already dominated by the Stampede Grounds and full of poor people even then?

I guess I'm just surprised they were able to cause any grief at all, considering the circumstances.

Yeah, reading the articles I have from the time, there were competing issues. One group feared the destruction of the Victoria Park neighbourhood (lol), while another favoured the Saddledome location only if the city re-zoned Vic Park into a higher density neighbourhood. Or, effectively, they wanted 25 years ago what is only just starting now.

The community association especially fought the Revelstoke Acres site that was first proposed (North of the CPR tracks, apparently), council compromised on the current location, which people still whined about. Bob Hawkesworth opposed the final location, and said the Saddledome would become known as "Klein's Folly". (That, incidentally, shows how dumb Hawkesworth is to history - "Smythes Folly", Maple Leaf Gardens, was brilliantly planned and constructed. It is also noteworthy that both MLG and the Dome were built during a major recession/depression, and both served to boost their city's morale.)

They continued to fight on arguments of parking and traffic concerns, and the fact that proposed Stampede Park expansion was not dealt with, leaving the entire neighbourhood in limbo. I guess they were ultimately proven correct in their concerns, but as you say, it isn't like Vic Park was worth fighting for.

I believe I heard that ice hockey was in the summer olympics the very first time it was played too.

Yup...

'Ice hockey tournaments have been staged at the Olympic Games since 1920. The men's tournament was introduced at the 1920 Summer Olympics and was transferred permanently to the Winter Olympic Games programme in 1924.'

Also wonder why Seabrook only had 8:46 of ice time. I thought he was always on when Keith was on.
