great news - now when I eventually leave my carrier I won't have to go through the pain of going through the 'new cell number' hassell.

My buddy who has worked at Telus Mobility for years have tried to get me on their network. I was reluctant before because I wanted to keep my current cell number. Now, I can take advantage of his hookups and threaten Rogers with me moving if I don't get cheap phones

Hot damn, bring it on! I'm happy with Bell but I'd at least like to have the option of Telus if Bell continues to have lousy handsets.

They might not give you cheap phones, but they will likely give you free service for a year or so if you are serious in your threats to move to Telus.

I just threatened Fido to move and got a free V400, 1/2 price on my contract for the first year, a year free VM and CD, and 2 years free roaming on Rogers network. Had to sign a 2 year contract but I've been happy with Fido for a long time.

Thanks to: http://www.redflagdeals.com

EDIT: This is awesome news by the way.

Was that before or after Rogers bought out Fido? Not sure if they'd still be worried about losing customers to a telco they just bought.

After a brief experience this past summer, want nothing to do with Robbers.
I had Fido for a couple years, and as much as I liked them (as an independant, now no longer), having phones not able to work where and when I needed them.

Did this yesterday. I was going to move to Telus as they had a decent deal, but I was only half serious because I didn't want to change my phone #.

If I'd known about the phone number moving thing I might have waited and moved, though I hate telus, Rogers = Fido, and Bell still seems to be having major billing software problems so there's not a whole lot else to choose from out west.

I would call the Rogers Trade-in by TELUS more than a decent deal... Free $300 dollar phone and a year of free service on an awsome rate plan. Expires Feb 28.
Rogers Trade-in

Yeah, if I had been able to keep my # I probably would have switched even though I hate Telus with a passion.
