frankly, i think the Incredibles was the best thing I saw all year, and would not hesitate to go pay to see it twice (sometime i virtually never do).

The best movie of 2004, IMO was Collateral.

Tom Cruise as a bad guy was awsome!!!

Paul Giamatti without a best actor nomination for Sideways, that is retarted. I hope Johnny Depp wins for best actor and Sideways wins for every other catagory it is nominated in.

Spider-Man 2 is nominated 3 times.. sure it is for sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects.. but, cool.

Jamie Foxx has been nominated as a Lead Actor and as a Supporting Actor.

I wonder if this has happened before?

Yeah, the Paul Giamatti omission was the first thing I noticed. Second thing I noticed was that Eternal Sunshine didn't get nominated for Best Picture. I felt it was overall even better than Sideways, and definitely better than Aviator, Finding Neverland, or Ray.

between 2 little kids at home, and going to Flames games all spring, I think I only saw 4 movies this year...interestingly all have at least some nominations

Don Cheadle was very good in Hotel Rwanda, but sounds like best actor category is pretty stacked this year

these things i view as i view the olympic judged events - close to meaningless in what gets chosen and what loses.

it's an honor to be nominated, for sure, but i wouldn't _not_ watch a movie because it was overlooked by these guys.

movies like 'the aviator' and 'ray' will usually be in the running for these awards, probably a combination of deep feelings by everyone on the subject matter and the attention to detail given by the studio to a movie that important to the american public. howard hughes and ray charles were great figures in american history, movies aboot them might stand a lesser chance of being done poorly.

I didn't watch any of these movies last year but the thing that I noticed was no nomination for Moore and/or Fahrenheit 9/11. Good to see. I believe he took the film out of the running for Best Doc so he could get a shot at Best Pic.

Yeah. More common on the female side. Holly Hunter did it. As did Emma Thompson. Maybe Streep too but not sure about that last one.

Jamie Foxx should win for Ray or I am done watching the oscars. That was the best acting performance I have seen in a looong time.

I didn't think the Aviator was that 'great', it really felt like random pieces of his life and the ending was unexpected and bizarre.

The Passion of the Christ got snubbed.

I am glad The Passion wasn't nominated for best picture. A guy got tortured for an hour and that was basically it. There were many better options out there.

Blech, Collateral was totally played up and hyped. I thought it really under-delivered.

Anyone else here rate movies more against expectation as opposed to some objective meter-stick? If I 'assume' a movie is going to be good, and its less than that, i'm pretty disappointed. But if I think it might be bad, and it turns out to be decent, i'm happy.

For some reason to me its all about expectations. Collateral didn't meet them (imo).

Well if Don Cheadle or Johnny Depp win then you have nothing to complain about. All 3 were superb perfromances. Although Paul Giammiti did a better job then all 3.. stupid academy.

That was a pretty awful movie. I mean it was bad. Ya, Jesus is good and all that garbage but The Passion of the Christ was just a bad film.

Yeah, no Giamatti for Best Actor is surprising, but what about NO UMA THURMAN??? And no QT or Carradine for that matter? When are they going to realize that it takes a truly brilliant director/actor to make an action film as good as KB2? Why is that type of acting/directing never recognized? Bleh. No Jim Carrey either. Weak.

Are the Oscars becoming more and more irrelevant?

Actually you know what- as I look over the nominees and winners from the past 30 years, they seem to have 1 "Best Picture" winner right (American Beauty), and although they always seem to nominate the good acting performances, the best ones almost never win.

Why do intelligent film lovers still care about them if this is the case? I know I haven't watched one in about 6 or 7 years. I'll read the nominees and winners, but that's about it.

Here's my winners:

Best Picture- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Best Actor- Jamie Foxx - Ray

Best Actress- Uma Thurman (although Imelda Staunton was really good...will probably win)

Best Supporting Actor - David Carradine (DUH!)

Best Supporting Actress - I guess Virginia Madsen, but nobody really stood out to me

Best Director- Tarantino

Best Original Screenplay- ESOTSM

Best Adapted Screenplay- Sideways

Cinematography- ESOTSM

Art Direction/Costume Design - The Life Aquatic (Come on, if you've seen this movie, it's a gimme)

Foreign - The Sea Inside (Just saw this this week- really good)

The Aviator was good but something seemed to be missing LIKE THE END OF THE MOVIE.
The end was made 20+ years ago. It's called "Melvin and Howards"

Straying here......but I find that Don Cheadle is always very good. He's come a long way from "Rocket".
