Question HELP! Anyone know a good computer repair company?

Anyone know a good company to call for computer repair? Preferably one that will come to your house.

What do you need repaired? If it's hardware computers are so cheap now it might cost you less to just buy a new one. If it's anything Windows or other flavor of OS I can probably help you out.

You'd probably have better luck flashing a few bills (edit: or some beer!) to the forum folk - someone will probably take it on for you.

Wasn't there a guy who "outsourced" some typing or transcribing to a forum member once?

The computer decided that it no longer wanted to turn on . . . (I'm assuming it's a hardware issue). The bar on the front of the computer that you pushed to turn it on doesn't seem to have any resistance . . . it's like you're not pressing on anything . . . so it not turning on.

What brand is the computer (or case)? Sounds like the switch is physically broken.

Or its a soft-switch and the power-supply is kaput.

You could more than likely get it fixed just by listening to the guys here at CP though.

Oh, and 4x4 was the guy who outsourced some work to a fellow forum member. He needed something written and paid $50 for it IIRC. Pretty nice of him.

Is it plugged in? (Sadly, that happens ALOT, especially after people clean).

If it's an older style case (with a mechanical push button power switch), try this:

1. Open the case.
2. Identify where the 'Case power button' meets the actual switch inside.
3. Make sure it's working properly (no popped springs or broken peices).

I've seen it happen a couple of times on older style cases. The case button is usually a piece of plastic that pushes into the 'clicking switch' inside the PC.

Or, after you make sure its plugged in, open the case and see if there is a light on the motherboard.

It should be lit up if your computer is plugged in and the power supply is working.

These guys have a physical shop in Kensington (facing 14th street), but they're mobile as well. Very knowledgable, helpful and attentive.

I am guessing it is an emachines computer and the pastic holding the button is physically broken. I have come across a few of these over the last few years.

PM me and I can help you confirm that.

If you can do this you can probably fix it yourself. Find the broken plastics and you will see the actual switch. press the button and your computer should boot. You can either mod the case to leave the small switch accessible or replace the computer case with a new one. 20 minutes and $50 you should be done. If you want to hire someone still let me know.

Yeah, the power switch comes out extremely easy on those types of computer cases.

Usually had to apply a little more hot glue to the plastic frame holding in the physical switch during assembly.

Popped out switch is the most likely result.

Take the top off the case and there are usually two screws holding onto the front as well as there may be screws that are holding it on. Sometimes there are tabs too. Just fiddle with it, it's not so hard to get off. You need to remove the entire front plastic black panel.

If you are lazy, you could just find the power connector on the motherboard and pull it off and replace it with another switch or even start the computer by shorting out the jumpers with a screwdriver.

The front usually has 2 screws up by the holder of the cd/dvd rom. It should also have 4 (might be 6) plastic hinge or grabber thingys (2 at the top, 2 at the bottom, maybe 2 in the middle on each side) that also help hold in the front of the case.

You will want to remove the opposite panel as well.

Then after you have removed the 2 screws holding the front, pop the bottom plastic, and then the top, and you should be able to remove it without mucking up the cd rom. Otherwise just pop out the plastic panel that's below it.

Got the front off . . . popped out really easily!

Looks like ya'll were right on . . . the switch is popping out . . . Long live the CP brain trust!!

Pops back in alright . . . but seems to come back out again fairly easily when pushing on the power bar . . .

So now what? Is there some way to secure it in place so that it stops coming out? How would you do that . . . or with what? Nothing appears to be broken . . . all the plastic is still in place.
