Default Career Counselling

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with using a career counselor?

I am considering an change in jobs/industry.

I am interested to know if they are useful to helping you change or identify industries that would be a good fit.

I used one when I was packaged out seven years ago as it was included in my severance package. The most value I got out of it was the resume writing and interviewing sessions. They were absolutely bang on with what employers are looking for for different roles and bang on with the type of questions that are usually asked and the type of answers that employers are looking for.

I didn't switch fields, but I did switch industries and got a lateral move into a different role than what I was doing for my previous employee. Which was exactly what I was looking for, since I was starting to get tired of my old job.

I work closely with the career counselors on campus, and my former boss runs a private career counseling service. I haven't spoken with him for a bit, but he is on LinkedIn. Assuming he is still running his business and hasn't moved on again, I could provide contact info via PM if anyone is interested. I also know some colleagues who do life coaching - sort of a different way of setting goals, assessing where you are at and what you are looking to achieve.

I went through Right Management which is a division of Manpower. Not sure what they charge as mentioned earlier it was part of my severance, but they were absolutely spot on with resume writing and interview advice. I dug through my email and their website is http://www.right.com.
