Honest Transmission Shop? or...HELP!!!
I remember about a month or two ago I was making fun of I think Peanut for not rolling vehicles over 200,000 km. Well Karma, ladies and gentleman is indeed a bitch, because at 202,000 km almost exactly is when my tranny started giving me hell.
This is what I have been posting round the internet on various forums and I hope maybe someone here in the CP nation can help:
Quote:
Hey guys,
I drive a stock 98 Ranger 2WD Auto 3L and I am having tranny problems.
First of all, when cold it doesn't want to get reverse or drive until it warms up.
Secondly, when I put it in drive nothing happens. If I sit there and wait for a few minutes it will eventually grab and begin to roll, but then when I apply throttle it just revs...and then clunks in and were on our way. It also shifts rough sometimes into second, but then I'm fine and it drives no problem. Third is still fine.
Even once driven, this is happening at every single stand still. Rolling start down a hill is fine though.
Fresh tranny fluid and filter, btw, but this problem began before I changed it. Was hoping for the easy fix, but to no avail.
I'm an amateur, btw. WTF? HELP!!!

Hate to say it, but at 200+ kms, with an auto tranny, you're going to put more money into it than it's worth...

Take it to a mechanic and get it looked at. You dont need a Tranny shop specifically. Most shops decent shops shoul be able to look at it. Ask about maybe grabbing a used tranny.
A tranny shop is good if you want to get your tranny rebuilt.
I dont live in Calgary, so no recommendations, but I had the same problem with an older truck I had, They found a used tranny with 110K on it, put it in for around $600 and it lasted years, until I sold it.
If you are mechanically inclined and have the tools, or can go into a garage after hours, they arent the hardest to change out yourself, just time consuming. I would have done my own, just need a tranny jack and a decent garage.

Your lucky to have gotten that thing to 200. The Auto in those Rangers is a POS. You need it rebuilt ($1500+) or a new one. Don't even bother with a used one, not worth the hassle. My brother in law had one and when it went we searched everywhere for a used one, no dice. Found one but it had its own issues so we were screwed. Ended up swapping in an 4.0 5 spd combo from a newer Ranger (huge job).
The plus side is they go so often the transmission shops should have a few in stock so shop around for a good price and find a mech to throw it in.

^ I want to go 5-spd manual, and am thinking about getting a 5.0L and 5-spd from an explorer and just swapping them out. Aparently doing the engine and tranny together is easier than just one or the other (?). Also, the thing bolts right in.
If I have to spend $1500, I'd rather just do the conversion.
If you live in Calgary speede5, and would be interested in helping with the conversion that would be sick.

Unless you went carburated you cant just swap the 5.0 in without changing all the wiring harnesses. I think you would need a bigger budget to cover a new harness, the motor, tranny, engine mounts, new radiator ect.

Maybe CN Auto? Nicest guys there, they fixed up a 91 town car I bought, got it through safety, and I haven't had a problem with it since. Runs like a dream

Very low key place.
