Panthers Trade Block
I'm not necessarily going to trade anyone right now, but I figure if someone offers something that I like I'll pull the trigger
Cap room this season - I have 6.7 million in Cheese room to give, but this is an asset not freely thrown in.
Rod Brind'Amour
Kirk Maltby
Rob Niedermayer
Adam Hall
Brian Rafalski
Kim Johnson
Mike Van Ryn
The rest of the players I'll probably be keeping for the time being, but like anything, if you make an offer, I'll consider it.

A significant offer has been given for one of these players. Get your offers in while they're still here.

Chris Phillips is gone to Philadelphia along with the entire amount of his contract for this year for Tim Erixson, Washington's first round pick this year, and Boston's 2nd round pick next year.
I didn't want to get rid of Phillips, but really, getting 2 1sts and a 2nd for him is a very good deal.

Stephane Yelle, 0.76 million, Edmonton's 5th this year, and my 5th next year have been dealt to Philadelphia in exchange for Aaron Johnson.
Johnson has impressed me this year.

With some of the players that are a bit sketchy like Toskala, Hall and Van Ryn that have another year left after this season, I am willing to take them back after the season because they're going to get nailed on the re-rates.

Yikes...basically replacing Phillips with Johnson...sure the pieces might be nice, but this does nothing to help you for the next couple years except get you a 5-6 dman

Yes, but my team is currently 25th, and not getting any better any time soon, so I'm re-tooling a bit.
This is just the first in a huge group of trades I'll be doing soon.
Also, currently, I have about 20 million to spend next season if I move a couple more players, so I'll be able to plug a few holes that way as well.

True....I just think you could have gone for a body instead of prospects/picks.

I'm planning on getting more ready players for some of the other guys on that list (Rafalski/Jonsson etc)

I agree that's not a good deal at all. Phillips is a signed player at 5 million and you didn't even get a regular player back. Aaron Johnson is a journeyman. At least you could have demanded a higher quality 1st rounder.

I did, but it wouldn't have had the 2nd next year. At this point, I'd rather have two shots at a good player than 1.

Chris Phillips is getting up there and won't get much better. I personally like this deal for both sides. Tim Erixon is an underrated prospect and I think he'll shine at WJC. Getting 2 1sts and a 2nd rounder for Phillips I think is a pretty solid return.
And really, FLA needs to do a semi-rebuild. The route they tried this summer didn't work, and now Matt is trying to correct things again.
Overall, I think this deal isn't as bad as other GM's are saying.

Well the earliest that Erixon will even get a sniff with the Flames is 3 years from now. Say you traded for Matt Pelech in December of 2005.....you're still waiting for him to make the team, and thats 4 years ago now. It's not like those picks are looking to be top 10 selections either. Percentages suggest that neither of those picks will yield a player who goes on to play 300 NHL games. At 31 Phillips isn't a year from retirement, so I wouldn't call it getting up there.

I think its fair, I told CG to wait it out and see some competitive offers but he felt this was a offer he couldnt refuse. I dont know what others feel but I try to stay far from Flames prospects because of the depth the organization has. Like Syl mentioned, Erixon is minimum 3 years away - yes there could be a surprise but I just dont see it happening. Pending what washingtons pick turns out to be it could work out to be a good deal for the Panthers.

My commentary on the two trades.
I traded a 65 OV defenseman who's 31 and plays a physical style (meaning he could break down in a couple years) for a 19 year old prospect D-man that could be a good two way D-man, and a pick that'll be in the 15-25 range depending on what the Caps do, and a 35-50 pick next year. In addition, that 5 million dollars that I would've spent on Phillips for next year can be re-allocated to spend on an unrestricted free agent, whether that's for a scorer, or a D-man, who knows, maybe I'll go on a backup binge for next year (already got two.....)
The Yelle/Johnson trade to me is similar to the Helm/Marchant trade. Helm has the potential to be a 2nd line player, but at worst will be a 4th liner. From what I've seen of Johnson thus far, I think he's got similar upside to that of Sarich or a guy like Warrener, which is about similar to being a 2nd line player. At worst Johnson will be a #6 D-man going forward. The 5ths are basically irrelevant. This is a bit of a risk on my part, but it's not like Yelle was going to be a mainstay on my team for years and years.
With both trades, in a strict asset management sense, both these trades are wins for me, and that's all that matters to me for right now. Of course Joe gets quite a decent deal as he's basically got two key pieces for a playoff run for 1 prospect, 1 6th D-man, and a couple picks.

2005 at the time wasn't known to be an overly deep draft year and Pelech was admittedly a reach as he was supposed to go into the 2nd round. I see Tim Erixon as a different type of player; already fairly mature in his game. He will still likely be 3 years away yes, but I see him at his draft ahead of Pelech at his draft...Pelech was verrry raw.
I agree with most of what you're saying Chad, but I also think that 2 1st rounders in the CPHL are worth a 30 year old vet on a UFA grid contract, irregardless of the fact they are 3 years away. I bet a team struggling to make the playoffs would happily move a 30-year old vet for 2 1st's and a 2nd. It frees up cash and they get some good picks.

I don't know how the ratings and grid are going to play out next season...but don't forget guys signed to grid deals last year came at a discount because most players got a ratings boost when they adjusted the SIM for it's current output. So Phillips who was a 65 guy cost 5 million...if the ratings hold, a comparable replacement guy costs you 6 this summer.

I was wondering how all of that would be handled because a number of guys got a 1 or 2 OVR jump in ratings, so this will impact some RFA signings by quite a bit. I wasn't sure if the OVR ratings would be lowered at the end of the year to reflect that adjustment or not...

I need to move out a player for a cheaper player. With Halpern coming back from injury in 2 days, I won't have enough cap room to cover his salary. Ideally, I'd move Halpern himself and problem solved.
PM me.
