ESPN to broadcast 3D sports

Sports broadcasting will enter a new dimension in 2010 ... the third dimension, as ESPN will unveil the industry's first 3-D network.
ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa vs. Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.
Other events to be produced in 3-D include the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, college basketball and football contests, up to 25 World Cup matches and the Summer X Games. Additional events will be announced at a later date.
"ESPN's commitment to 3-D is a win for fans and our business partners," Bodenheimer said in a statement. "ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan's viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing."
ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years, even showing a USC-Ohio State college football game in select theaters and to 6,000 fans at the Galen Center on USC's campus.
"This is a turning point for 3-D," Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro told USA Today.

If I have to wear goggles to watch TV, you can count me out. It's fine wearing them for a movie, but I don't want to wear goggles every time I watch a Flames game.

Agreed, that would be annoying. And I think the novelty of 3D would wear off really quickly. I haven't tried any 3D technology in years, but unless the viewing experience makes you feel like you are in the arena, I'm not sure a pop up book type experience would really enhance anything. People are just getting into the HD world, I think that should be good enough for now.

I bet you're more excited for John Daly in 3D. You'd have to buy a widescreen for that.

Surprising that for once it's sports and not the porn industry at the vanguard of a new technology push.
I'm not sure I want to live in this world.

3D is cool on a massive screen (Avatar in 3D IMAX was bitchin). Wearing the goggles at home even on a decent sized plasma wouldn't be nearly as good.

From what I have heard, DirecTV is launching a new dish (or already launched it) that will have the 3D stuff built in. The DirecTV people said all it requires is a firmware update on the receivers and has to be outputted by HDMI (so obviously HD receivers only). I don't recall reading anything about glasses, but I'm sure it will be required.
Probably use the polarized glasses they use in the theatres now.

I'm guessing it won't work on your existing television. The real question is, will this work on my existing television? (I have a 3D-Ready DLP.)
Lots of technical info missing from those articles, but I'm hoping if it's going to be anaglyph (red-blue), it wouldn't be news.
