Question Cool things to do with a spare computer?

My family now has an older spare computer that my dad basically has told me I can do anything I want with it.

The specs (off the top of my head):

- Pentium 4 @ 2.66 GHz with Hyper Threading
- 320 GB Hard Drive
- 1 gig Ram
- DVD burner
- Windows XP SP3 installed

I plan to install Ubuntu on it, just to play around, but I was wondering if anyone here has cool suggestions for other stuff to do with it? Could it work as an HTPC for instance? Anything else?

Edit: Oops, meant to post this in Tech Talk.

No, no. I said it was a spare machine. What do you think the main one is serving as?

P4s are the most energy inefficient computers out there. The coolest thing to do would be to take it to the computer recycler. For the amount of energy that thing uses (80-100W) it isn't worth using it as an HTPC or for something else that will have it on for long periods of time.

I second MAME. I got mine connected to a Projector in a spare room. Nothing like loading up some classics like Ninja Turtles or Super Sprint.

I've always wanted to have a dedicated media server, so that I could hook it up to TV, archive movies and music on it, and pick and choose those files on a whim while looking for a movie to watch.

Not sure if that's your bag, but it kinda is mine.

Install Windows Home Server on it, get your folks to spring for an extra TB of HDD space to facilitate "backups of family computers" and all your important files (like porn) and then get a WD HDTV MP to hook to whatever TV you want.

If you don't want to put too much cash into it, then just set it up with Ubuntu and create a Samba server to host all your files.

Put a TV card in it and dedicate it to streaming games.
