Looking to set some fitness goals for the new year and am thinking of investing in some fitness software.
Anyone on CP have experience with different choices on the market?

it's a tool to assist me in achieving my goals.
No different than any other software. Accounting can all be done with pencil and pen, but the software makes the statistical analysis much more effective, easy, and quick than without.
Same here. The analysis ought to be more effective with the assistance of software.
Thanks for the dickhead response though.

What type of software are you looking for? A calorie counter type software or a workout routine software?

What exactly are you looking for this program to do? Track workouts? Track calories/food eaten? Set goals for you?

There are free sites like fitday.com or myfitnesspal.com which can track all those things. They can't link up with a Garmin device or anything but same idea.
Without getting too personal what are you trying to accomplish? What are your trouble areas? What kind of access do you have to fitness equipment?
I guess my main question is why do you think this program will help you succeed?

See here:
http://fitness-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
They disqualified CrossTrainer from their reviews, but it is also very good according to them:

I did the trial of Crosstrainer. It looked pretty good, but in the minimal amount of time that I have to split between exercise and sitting in front of a computer planning exercise, I opted for the former.

I'm looking to do the Banff Melissa's Road Race next year and want to make a good go of it.
I made a bet with a guy who is exceptionally fit that I could challenge him and I want to win. I played a lot of sports growing up and my body is showing the effects - especially my feet which cannot seem to handle high impact training. In order to win my bet, my training will need to be more than running as well as thorough.

Interesting.
For starters is it the 21km or 10km run?
Also, I'd look up what type of time this person got. You can go into Melissa's website and look up results, past results, and find what times they've had before and build from there.
There are plenty of running programs to get you training for a specific time.
Add in some cross training and weight training and get started.
As for software - never used. Currently writing my stuff down with excel.
Also consider how much running you've done/doing now? Or how much of anything? You've got 9 months. So starting from nothing is do-able. Starting from something is easier, but if you bull yourself and start from something when you shouldn't (for example jumping into a running program for time when you should be doing a get used to running type program), you're going to hurt yourself (good chance).
Good luck! It's a fun race!

my plan is for the first three months is to train the stablizing muscles and heart. the next 6 is to build up a plan to do the 10 km in a fast time.

Have you ran before (been a runner)?
Are you running now?
What is "a fast time"?

1) The Running Room offers training programs tied around specific running events. They probably have something for the Melissa. Some races also have free online training programs.
2) You will want to buy a Garmin 305 with the heart rate monitor. These are about $170 at Costco. It includes software that will track your progress. (I use the web based version.)
3) During your intial training, you will want to keep close tabs on your heart rate. On the Garmin, you can customize the display so that the heart range is displayed in large numbers on the display so that it is easy to read. Your target training range will depend on your age.
4) If you are carrying around some extra pounds, weight loss will also be a huge factor in achieving faster race times.
5) Don't overdo it. Anytime anything starts to hurt, ease off. Pushing yourself too hard is counterproductive. Injuries will hugely impede your progress.
6) If you have feet problems, consider orthotics.
7) Good fitting shoes. Go to a running store (Gords, Running Room) for help.
8) Stretching.
