Default Credit Card Fraud

Should know this but don't......looked it up briefly on google but couldn't figure it out.....so CP.....how does it work?

Got a call today from Mastercard today and they said that someone used my credit card for $100 authorization of gas at a 7-11 in Concord, Ontario. Strange....never heard of the place. They asked me if I got gas at 7-11 about a week ago? Yep.

A) How did someone use my card today without physically having it to get gas at a 7-11? I can't imagine that I could walk in to one and just rattle off my credit card number to pay for my gas and not sure if the pay at the pump has a way around this.

B) Should I not get gas at 7-11 anymore or is this just likely random and someone likely got my number off an internet transaction etc.

They are sending me out a new card and I have to complete a report for Mastercard but other than that it is not a big deal. How did this happen though?

I think usually how it works is they basically make a duplicate of your card. If that's what happened it could've been from anywhere, not necessarily 7-11.

At the 7-11 or some other busniess you, a card skimmer was set up and they got your credit card info off your magnetic strip.

I know a guy who won't go to drive through bank machines because he is scared that someone will use surveillance to get his account info etc. A bit much I thought but after this today maybe he has been right all along Also paranoid about dumpster divers and I do notice people patrolling recycle bins around the city so I guess my lazy method of hand shredding will have to go back to my cross-cut shredder.

The thing about credit card fraud is that it is quite easy to remedy. Now if it gets into the realm of identity theft then stuff can go sour mighty quick, but something like the above is thankfully not a huge deal. I really appreciate it when I go on a trip and my credit card company contacts me to make sure I know my card is being used out of province.

You can be paranoid if you'd like, but I've always felt that if you're just diligent and watch what's happening financially you'll generally be ok.

Yep, every trip we call VISA and MC and let them know where we are going and for how long etc and they give you a 1-800 # for any issues you may have and never had a problem yet. Often get calls about rapid fire purchases so generally almost disregard calls from the "security dept" but today was the first time for a legit fraud. I think for identity theft most home insurance policies will cover you for a minimum $30,000 and also the legal costs associated. Title insurance is not covered by a home insurance policy and arranged through Stewart or RBC etc. Way up the fraud food chain
