Default Here's some good news

Looks like the city came to their senses on the proposed airport trail tunnel. Good news all around.

I wish costs like this would be line item posted so we can see why it costs so much to to do this when they dont even need to tunnel under an existing runway. 267 mil seems awful expensive to simply replace a section of current road with one that goes through a tunnel.

Well...I'm sure someone can turn this into bad news. After all, the city plans on throwing $50 mill. into it. You know where that money's gotta come from, not to mention the other $200 mill.

Keep in mind I don't know the slightest thing about runways...

The longest runway at the airport right now is almost 4 kilometers long. The new one can't be much longer than that, but it is going to cost 1.8 billion dollars, so give or take, this runway is going to be 400 million bucks a kilometer.

Does that seem a little steep to anyone else? Is the price of a whole new terminal buried in that number or something?

It has to be strong enough to hold the weight of a loaded jet. Plus its running under the ground for a significant distance. By the time they move all the earth, drive the piles, pour the tunnel walls, pave, cover ect I'm not surprised by the cost.

Nor do I except I have done a bit of work on the existing runways and noticed that the concrete has got to be a good foot thick. Muptiply that by 14,000 feet and however wide, and you've got a pretty good chunk there alone.

At $400,000/m I'd say that probably includes the runway, avionics equipment, aprons, and extension of the terminal to handle the additional traffic.

To clarify, this won't be replacing any current roadway.

Barlow Trail south of the terminal is going to be closed once construction begins and the new runway will be built where Barlow currently sits. Once this happens, everyone will have to access the airport from the north.

The tunnel will be an extension of Airport Trail under the new runway, connecting to the northern edge of Saddle Ridge, and communities that don't exist yet.

Without the tunnel, people in those communities would have to go either north to Country Hills Blvd or south to McKnight Blvd to get to the Deerfoot, or anywhere west of the airport (which is what they currently have to do anyway). With the tunnel, they'll be able to split the difference and use Airport Trail (and have a quicker route to the airport).
