LED Sports Ticker for home use
My friend wants a live sports ticker LED scrolling screen like in the lounge of Boston Pizza or in a Sports Bar of these.
Does anyone have one and suggest where he can find this?
We've been looking online but there is no prices and companies don't seem to be responding to our emails.
Any suggestions would help.
I don't know if this is in the right forum so mods move it if needed.
Thanks

That is definately an awesome idea and I would love one, but not for the $1k price tag. I wonder if a computer whiz could whip something like this up on his own if he had all the parts?

Don't forget the subscription after the first year. Cool, but too rich for my blood.

That's way too expensive for home use.
I've always wanted someone to make a set-top imitation score board. You could log into your team's score board and it would transmit the score, shots, penalties and time.
Edit: Better yet, now with the fancy score clocks they could also transmit the video from the dome score board. That would be the ultimate way to watch the Flames when you're at home without tickets.

Daktronics is the company the Dome uses, they have all sorts of gear for all sorts of uses, but mucho money, worth it though.

Excellent idea - I doubt you could do it for cheap, though. These guys: http://www.tickermedia.com/sports-tickers-w.html seem to have this covered, but the fact they don't list prices makes me think that $1000 might be low...

Is there some serious mark up at work here? How can they justify that price? I mean, it's a bunch of LED's attached to a small computer.

You claim you already searched online and no one responded? I have dealt with assorted manufacturers and they are all very keen on making a sale. There are numerous companies that have assorted products, this is certainly an item that can be super expensive or cheap and useless!
My quick search came up with thousands of hits.

This seems like a product that you would see for sale in/on the Air Mall.

Oh Sky Mall....I will never buy from you but I can spend many minutes desiring things from your crazy catalog like this intriguing pizza maker, a Snuggie rip-off, or an odd travel case to stuff a dog in....so much odd!!!

$900-$1000 seems to be the going rate. Plus whatever the subscription fee is.

For that price you may as well just buy a flatscreen and hook it up to your computer, there's probably a lot of screensavers that can d/l the same info from the web.

I've done that search and sent links to my buddy who wants it, actually it's his girlfriend trying to buy it for him for christmas, she claims that she tried contacting them and has had no response. I did send her jammies' link but i don't know if she called.
I found an LED ticker screen at staples and i've built a few online applications that display a stock price from a live RSS feed so i thought that i could develop a quick application for lives scores since this screen does connect to the computer. But these screens seem to only take input from a file through their windows(ughh i'm on mac) program that is specified and then it definitely would not be live even if i were to write the file dynamically.
I've also looked into hacking some of these screens but most of the hacks are geared to home built LED screens.
I guess this is why they can charge so much for a yearly subscription for live scoring on these LED screens.
My friend's a huge NCAA basketball fan, he takes a whole week off of work for rounds 1-2 of march madness and does not move off his couch except for bathroom and food. His goal for his sports room is 3 - 32" flatscreens side by side so he can watch multiple games that are on at the same time. The ticker is to go above the tvs so that he knows all the scores cause during round one of march maddness there is too many games on at once to televise. He's not very computer savvy so he doesn't really use the computer much and prefers to squint down at the bottom ticker on the channels. He also loves the look of the LED ticker so it makes him feel as though he's in a sports pub.
Thanks everybody, if anybody does run into a solution that isn't $1000 dollars please let me know.

He knows that those scores are always listed right at the top of the screen right?

Sorry, he squints at the top ticker on the channels. His eyes are not that great and he wants a display to look at without struggling to read the scores, this is where the LED screen comes into play.

They arent that hard to put together or program either, the hardest part would be finding an online link to updated scores in a east to code format.
