make sure your computers are not streaming or you dont have any torrent app open while you play, that will slow it down a ton.

Thanks, but I don't think that's the problem we are having. As far as I know there are not torrents being downloaded. I have the Ethernet from my Shaw modem to a wireless router, than I have an Ethernet cable run from the router to direct into the PlayStation. Would this affect anything?

have you tried rebooting your router/modem. could be some sort of awful network congestion. also check your ps3 nat status. forward the necessary ports so your nat type is "open"

Is your wireless secured and you are sure no one is on it that shouldn't be? If you live near me than its me stealing your interwebz access

Having your PS3 behind 2 routers can cause problems. I had to rewire my setup because of that issue. Try unplugging both routers for 30 seconds to reboot them.
Unplug every other device from the router and leave the PS3 as the only connection. This might help narrow down the issue.
If you need to try resetting the router to factory and start from scratch. Routers are just tiny computers. Sometimes they need a reboot or a "re-install"

Thanks all for the responses, I've currently got everything unplugged to re boot them. I have tried this before with no result but I'll give it another shot. I'm not sure if my network is unsecured or not, but I suspect that might be a problem. Someone mentioned nap settings how do I change those?
Also I've tried going direct from my modem into the play station but it won't recognize my IP address. How do I fix that problem?

I'm Jpold's roommate, so I'll continue this thread.
The internet is secured, and there is nothing being downloaded/ torrented etc.
We are trying to find another game to test online, but we really don't have any other games beside GTA, but we'll give it a shot. Besides, I can't imagine it has anything to do with the game, but it makes sense to try to rule it out.
I suspect it's our wireless router. It's an old D-link WBR 1310 G-router. But we have been using for over a year without any big issues like this.
Edit: Ok, GTA is taking forever to load. Not sure what else to try.

Testing our connection speeds on my laptop and PS3 are as follows:
PS3 yesterday: DL speed = ~2.9 Mb/s - wired
PS3 earlier tonight: ~9 Mb/s - wired
PS3 right now: 3.8 Mb/s - wired
Laptop right now: 3.9 Mb/s - wireless
Between yesterday and any time today, even though the connection speeds have varied the NHL continues to lag like crazy. I never did check our connection speeds prior to this issue, but like we say, it has never lagged like this in the past.
The only thing that has changed since this lagging started was we ran a system update. But there is nothing we can do to change that, so I really have no idea where to go from here.
Edit: PS3 DL speeds are only getting slower as we keep checking. It has got as low as < 1 MB/s. Fkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

Try performing some ping and traceroute tests to see if your connection is stable or not. Google is a good test.

Also if its an "old" router try upgrading the firmware. Also look at the QoS settings and set the playstation up to have bandwidth priority.

I honestly have no idea what this means, but I can guess that 0% packets lost means its stable? Yes?

How do I upgrade the firmwire? Also is the QoS settings on the router or something I change on the playstation?

Nope, nothing besides this laptop (wireless) and my PS3 (wired). Most of the time we are using the PS3 online I'm not even using this laptop.

login to your router, find the ps3 ip address, and DMZ it from the router web face. "exposed host" is what dmz is. it forwards all the ports on the ps3. after that, nat type should be "open" and you should hopefully get less lag.
