Airlines must now provide obese with extra seat for FREE!
http://www.torontosun.com/news/canad...78671-sun.html
http://www.google.com/hostednews/can...MJqI1Ustnhy2ig
So the airline have made a doctors note mandatory to get the extra seat, so now doctors are pissed off because it is a waste of our already scarce medical resourses.
What a bunch of bull crap. Maybe I can get my doctor to give me a note saying I'm obese just so I don't have to have anyone sit next to me.

Time to start packing away the timbits!
Also, I wonder if it would accept a note from my Wii Fit...

But they can't possibly go against a doctor!! That is the entire reason they make doctors give notes, is to maintain that only real obese people are getting special treatment.
What happened to the good olde days when fat people just pay for two seats, or just buy one and encroach into my space.

Are there really enough super fat people in the country that this will burden our medical system?

Of course...but now considering statscan considers almost 1/4 adults obese...and whenever they wanna fly the need a doctors note? Just seems like another burden on our system that we shouldn't need because some higher ups in a private business dictated it.

I say they start charging an overweight charge similar to that of baggage. Or maybe make it $/lb over.
Seriously though... This is a lose-lose situation for everyone involved here. There will never be a good solution, just a best one. Wasn't it just last week where Wesjet said only obese people with a proven disability causing the obesity would only pay for one ticket, and others without proof would be buying two? What this reaks of is wesjet unable to determine what obese people actually have a disability so they now require a doctors note, but the doctors are unwilling to take the extra responsibility or open themselves to wrong interpretations/litigations. I don't see how this will overburden an already strained medical system, though there will probably be some people who will try to take advantage of this and be denied because they aren't obese enough.

Not unless you travel with a friend who can stow you in their carry-on. Then you can both travel for half price.

you realize that muscle weighs more than fat, right? So fit, muscle bound people should pay extra to fly to accomodate the pencil necked geeks or the malnourished meth addicts
That's just stupid.

To me this is a non-issue. It doesn't affect me. Air Canada's service and product cannot possibly get worse than it currently is and they constantly try to prop up any issue as a crutch to charge more hidden add ons or obtain government subsidies.
Fuel costs too much. The pensioners make too much. We need a new terminal. We need to charge for baggage. We need to charge for shi__y meals. Surely there are not enough clinically obese people in Canada to have this accomodation engaged on a regular basis. Despite what the airlines will try and have us believe - and people in this thread clearly are - the clinically obese are not going to be what drives the airlines into bankruptcy. Their terrible quality product has more to do with it than it does the clinically obese, but they are easy to pick on because singling out any other group on the basis of personal characteristics would get you sued.

If you think Scare Canada is the dogs breakfast, you haven't flown US Airways then. If US Air could charge you extra for breathing oxygen, they would.
I'm all for the "overly large" to have 2 seats, I value the buffer zone.

Actually, it is the fat fatas who don't know when not to eat that extra slice of cheesecake that are causing this.
People with a medical condition are one thing.
People who eat an entire chocolate cake for breakfast should be buying two (three...four...) seats. It isn't anyone's fault but their own that they are fat.

Sure, but the chubby people who eat the extra piece of cheesecake aren't the people who will be using this opportunity.
To be clinically obese to get the doctors note, you have to be gigantic. Plus, to want to fly on an airline, you have to want to fly. There aren't that many huge people who want to fly.

Or if they can fit in the seat using the same seat belt... Then you can have two names on one ticket.

If you're so overweight you qualify for this and actually feel good about claiming your "free" seat....well....all the power to you I guess, fatty.

I'm all for them getting two seats. Hell I wish I could get two seats. I'm 250lbs and I barely fit in those seats
