2005 SU Elections

[Thunderball]

There's another election going on now until Thursday. I was waiting for someone else to start a topic on this, but I guess I have to.

Input is very important if people want a student government that represents them well.

As some of you know, my name is Matt Trotta and I am an incumbent Senator at the University and I am running for re-election. Any support you guys at CP can give me is great and deeply appreciated.

I probably shouldn't be posting all this here, but I could really use the support.

If anyone is curious about my platform, feel free to ask and I'll post it.

Wish you would have posted this earlier - I voted earlier today putting no candidate.

While we're on the subject, if you don't know who to vote for for Operations and Finance Commissioner vote for Andrew Lahey. He's a great guy, well-organized, and would definitely do a good job.

I vote Rock... but seriously I am really sick and tired of SU elections. Half the cantidates are pompous jackasses who feel as though they are better than the general student body. The one that I can think of is this Teale guy who I have heard, it honestly sounded like he was talking down to me, and as a result I wouldn't trust him at all. Smart guy but I know him, and he is a jackass.... only way I can describe him.

Don't forget that if you are voting for the Rock you are still voting for the guy that is running under that nickname. So its not sending much of a protest vote - more just electing a guy cuz of a cool gimmick.

Thunderball-I would still vote for you, but I already voted today and picked up my free pen.

Jiri-I think the fact that you are voting for somebody based on a cheap gimmick is the protest, or the show of apathy as it were. Either way, 'Vote The Rock' is the best campaign slogan I've heard.

^^^^Yeah I suppose. I guess for me it depends on whether the dude is running under "rock" as a protest itself or because he actually wants to win.

But none the less....it's a darn good idea and darn good slogan. I'm surprised no one came up with it before.

I too voted for the Rock as a protest - I hate the SU, the only impression I get of them, after 4 years, is they close off a field once a year and sell warm beer, and they whine a hell of a lot without offering solutions. I went to high school with one of the candidates for prez, and yea, no way he's getting my vote.

The rest I abstained - to show the SU more than any of the individuals (so didn't hurt ya there Thunderball). I quite frankly don't care and thought about not voting, but decided to make it heard that I'm tired of all the whining and bullshinguard that comes out of MacHall, and that they need to change. Well, hopefully that's the message it sends :P

Edit: also voted against dino funding, made random choices w/ respect to what the SU shoudl do w/ money, and I voted against that fiddy-cen reduction of SU fees - big farking deal, voting on that is a waste of my time (yea yea). Cut it by 15 bucks and we're talking.

I'm a Political Science student, so I do take a genuine interest in these elections. I was going to vote for either Bryan West again or Austin ("Sign Guy") Hager, but Fadi Guirgis personally emailed me and told me all the problems he would attempt to fix in the Haskayne School of Business, including skyrocketing direct entry admissions for high school students, which I whole-heartedly support.

And anyone who actually brings themselves to vote for The Rock is seriously jeapordizing the credibility of the SU, or for whatever they actually have yet. Don't put that on them!

What credibility does the SU have... i mean the biggest things they really did involved getting people to spell out I Vote on a football field? make some comercials that cost huge dollars... The credability of the students union has been in jeopardy not because of someone running under "rock" but because they do shinguard all.

I voted West, the guy has at least got some stuff done over his tenure.

Jeopardizing the credibility of the SU????? What credibiliby do they have?

What does the SU do other than run Mac Hall? Really?
After four years at the University, I learned that no matter who you elect to the SU they will all do the same.

Have a campout to protest tuition.
Book a band for BSD.
Run Mac Hall.

That's about it. The SU has no power to change anything in the university that they don't directly pay for (and by directly, I mean by charging the SU fees, which Ironically went up quite a bit while I was going to the Uni).

Honestly, I'd read your platform, but I'd be willing to guess it's more of he same that I heard from every SU candidate I ever saw (lower tuition, get higher on the McLean's ranking, blah blah blah).

Shantz, I'm not running in these elections. Never have, never will.

My point is, if anyone is willing to vote for The Rock in this election, then it's either a form of protest or an ironic twist of student apathy.

I agree they are limited in what they can do as a functioning body, but I would place some blame on an apathetic student body in general. Lobbying is a proven, powerful form of political influence, but we just don't have the numbers at the U of C to justify any large-scale movement of sorts.

Voted Rock too, before reading this. This election has been terribly campaigned. There were lots of candidate posters around, which said absolutely nothing of value, and an article in the Gauntlet, and those were ALL I had to go on. I walked past a debate or something already in progress in Mac Hall on my way somewhere once, which I had no idea was happening...didn't see anything advertising it. Therefore, I voted for the people I knew (and knew would do a good job), and put no vote for the rest. Except the Rock, because I thought it was funny and wasn't impressed by ANY campaigns. One guy did actually come to my door in rez to remind me about the election and talk about his goals, only I had already voted - missed the buck there, buddy...would've gotten points for being the only person who reached out...only he was too late.
