Default First glimpse of Apple's Tablet?

How could this not be something you'd want?

Considering the potential integration a product like this could have with traditional print media, especially through an outlet like iTunes, I think we'll be seeing Apple's next big product plastered all over...everything.

I don't like that hand in the video, it's too spindly and double jointed looking.

As big a gadget freak as I am, that actually had little appeal to me. It's not as inexpensive or portable as an iPod Touch, and it lacks the functionality of a notebook with a full keyboard. It's a jack of all trades and master of none. Basically looked like a giant iPod to me. This Jesus Tablet had better be more than that.

Mainly it's the price point. What's Apple going to charge - $1,000 - perhaps more? About the price of a 13" MacBook I figure? I just don't see the public mass adopting it until it hits lower price points.

Besides - That didn't look like anything that had to be Apple specific. What if Time signs a deal with Amazon for distribution and releases it on a Dell?

Why not just make all this into a webpage instead of making us have to go out and buy a tablet?

I think Smartphones have eradicated the need for such a device.

Because it's Apple.

I will never own anything Apple. Don't like their industrial design. Don't like their software design. Don't like their graphical interface design. Don't like their technical design. Don't like their smug image. Don't like their ubiquity and popularity with the masses.

-edit
Oh crap, I just realized that I am typing this on an Apple Aluminum Keyboard!

2 things:

- There have been lots of rumours about how 'shockingly low' the price point is. Apple understands people won't be willing to go out and buy what is essentially a second computer unless it's a)cheap b)able to do something that both their laptops and iphone can't.

- At just about 2:17 in that video, you can see the blue scroll bar that OS X uses.

I've said this before on CP, and I'll say it again now, doubting the genius of Apple, with regards to what they see the market buying into, is a losing bet almost every time. I know that makes me sound like a cheerleader, but it's hard to argue that they've been anything less than spectacular at predicting market trends.

How do you know what the price will be? Here's something to check out:

Edit: Unfortunately, you have to sit through a bit of lameness at the beginning before it gets to the bit about the tablet's rumoured pricing. Actually, just fast forward to the 25min mark.

It's not an Apple tablet, its a demo of Time's new digital delivery model on a made up tablet device created by a web development/R&D/prototyping company.

The digital SI is a real thing and I have seen a demo video of it working on a touch screen Windows laptop.

On the Macbreak weekly podcast this week (I think it was this week, possibly last) one of the guests tried to build a tablet with his company. He says after reviewing the costs of what it would take to build a tablet up to apples standards he expects a price point between $500 and $800.

If the price was right for me I might consider one just for the media playback. I love watching tv shows and movies on my iphone ... I might like an upgrade. I would like it to have some greater functionality beyond just a big ipod though. If it's just a giant touch that can play itunes LP's I'm going to be pissed.
