Two Calgary children dead after domestic homicide
http://www.globaltvcalgary.com/world...824/story.html
Quote:
The father of two children found slain at a home in Calgary on Friday night is in custody — and the city’s police chief says only the quick response of his officers saved the life a potential third victim, the children’s mother.Police kicked down the door of a home in Calgary’s northwest and immediately found the body of a 13-year-old boy, police Chief Rick Hanson told reporters Saturday, as he revealed details about the horrific crime.

Quote:
The body of a nine-year-old girl was also found upstairs.
Police said the father is in custody and considered a murder suspect.

Bizarre story out of Panorama Hills and glad to see CPS caught the guy in the act trying to kill his wife as well.

Hanson praised the action of officers, saying from the time they got the 911 call to the time they forced their way inside was only 16 minutes.
|
Sixteen minutes still seems like a long time. If some ax-wielding maniac breaks into my house, I'm not calling 911 as I'm unlikely to be able to fight the guy off for 16 minutes. Hell, I can run to the police station in 10!!
BTW - I am in no way disparaging the efforts of the police. I'm just saying that their fastest response time is still going to be too slow to stop someone intent on murdering people.

But their response DID save somebody that would have otherwise been murdered so your comment is kind of bizarre.

Police on the streets were already inundated with calls, but veteran officers chose to make the "check on welfare" call a priority.
"It was an incredibly busy night, it was difficult to travel, calls were backed up and there were a multitude of serious calls and crashes," Hanson said.
|
roads were covered in ice at the time which certainly contributed to the delay.

How sad, I can't think of anything worse than having your children while you were there and there was nothing you could do to save them.

Why don't we all spend 100% of our income on taxes so we can have a cop on every corner? Having police is not free...if you wanted a 3 minute response time 100% of the time that will cost YOU money.
I am not sure what we can do about wackos like this guy, especially considering the police may have been tied up in other issues at that time. I am sure the police will come up with some explanation.

The police on duty are usually away on calls or patrolling, they don't hang around the station waiting for a call. So odds are they were previously occupied with other calls away from the station.
Also, in cases like this, I believe it's protocol to wait for backup before entering the home. (can someone clarify?). So the first car could have been on scene in 5 minutes and the next ones even later.

Is a "check on welfare" a priority call? Global said that the family was not known to police, so they wouldn't have suspected a domestic dispute. Depending on the actual call, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I commend them for acting quickly once they got there and saved a life in the process.

In THIS case 16 minutes was enough time to save someone. But a murderer can do a lot of damage in 16 minutes. I was going to type that the woman is "lucky to be alive" but it would be insensitive to say that someone who is going to suffer from this tragedy for the rest of their lives is "lucky".
I certainly applaud the efforts of the police to get there as fast as they could (especially given the conditions) and in time to save the woman.
