Crokinole
First off, how many people know what Crokinole is?
2nd, anyone know where to buy a board? I want to give one out for X-mas, and can't seem to find one in Calgary.

I love crokinole. I'm pretty good at it too. It's sort of like curling on a table with some variations. A well-stocked games store should have it, I'd think.

Me and my friend's have had some pretty intense Crokinole games, games which almost ended in bloodshed and ruined friendships. IF you google Crokinole you can find some pretty cool equipement, like finger guards, crystal tables, etc.

My biggest problem with Crokinole is that after the holiday season my finger feels like it's been hit with a hammer. You wouldn't think you could damage yourself doing something so minor, but there you go.

I love the game, it's something that's been in our family for generations. We just got a new board a couple years ago from this guy: http://www.michaudtoys.org/game3.html
it's the best board we've ever had and it is awesome looking too. I highly recommend it.

Billiards shops should have them. I remember that one in Northland Mall a gazillion years ago did, anyway.
Also maybe that toy store in Kensington - they carry nice wooden things like this. The Cochrane Toy Box might as well and if they don't I bet they'd order it in for you.

You could try various thrift stores to and try to find a board. The MCC Thrift shop might be more likely than most.

I got one last year at Games People Play in North Hill. I think it was about $50

Thneed, you stole my idea! I agree that the MCC thrift store is a very likely place -- although, at this time of year, I daresay very few Mennonites would be giving their crokinole boards up!
But it is a very popular pass-time within the Mennonite community, so I'd definitely check there ahead of any other thrift or second-hand store.
Beyond that, I can't say for certain. I know that sometimes, the types of game shops that sell billiard tables and dart boards for some reason also tend to have crokinole boards, but I honestly couldn't give you any names.
Good luck, though! Christmas just isn't Christmas without a few crokinole bruises.

Games People Play. If anyone in town will have it, they will.
The store is in North Hill Mall (16th Ave, 14th St). I'm never sure if I can post a link, so lets just say its on the world wide web, includes the stores full name, and is Canadian.
