Default Thierry Henry 'steals' World Cup 2010 qualification from the Irish

http://goal.com/en-us/news/465/franc...gainst-ireland

I've never been a huge fan of Henry, but he's certainly credited as quite the gentleman on the pitch. If you watch the replay, he very clearly hands the ball with the intention to keep the ball in play. Very dishonest play in my opinion.
What's worse is that he is unapologetic about it after-the-fact; makes me wonder if this reputation of being a gentleman is actually deserved.

Thoughts?

It's the officials job to make the call. If you think that if Iggy would kick in the winning goal in the Stanley cup finals he would say, "oh wait that wasn't sporting of me, disallow it". Keep dreaming.

Are you serious?

Why is this an issue? Should he have stopped playing, walked over to the referee and told him it hit his hand. Dude touched the ball with his hand and nothing was called....who cares? In every other sport players try and "cheat" without getting caught all the time. Whether it be trying to draw a charge, a little hook here or there, or drawing pass interference when there is none.

This isn't half as bad as the diving that goes on in Soccer.

Shouldnt have been there in the first place, line judges missed obvious offsides. In pro sports you play the gentleman so long as it doenst cost you the game. It is after all survival of the fittest.

He admitted after the game that it was a hand ball. what more do you want, sorry the ball hit my hand? Come on.

That it was a devine intervention?

If you're going to cheat at least say that God made you do it.

Cheating, really, a ball off a deflection hits his hand, its not like he volleyball slapped it in. Its a natural reaction to keep the ball in bounds.

I dislike the French as much as the next guy, but the reffs are 100% to blame for this, not Henry.

(1) It wasn't a deflection and (2)it didn't "hit" his hand. The ball was going out of play and he used his hand to control the ball.... twice It's not even a debatable point.

Or .. are you saying it "hit" his hand twice.

I was being sarcastic re. the Maradona "hand of god" incident.

Really? Happens all the time I suppose.
It's a natural reaction of soccer players to try and not touch the ball with their hand.

Form of protest. They and the world knows it's not going to happen.

I am reminded of the time a few years ago when Denmark was playing Iran and near the end of the half a whistle blew from the stands and the Iranian player thought that it was the halftime whiltle and picked up the ball...the Danes were awarded a penalty, and the Danish player intentionally squibbed it wide stating after the game that it wouldn't be right to capatilize on that kind of mistake...the Danes lost the game 1-0...because of an act that i would guess not many other players/teams would repeat. Very classy, I love Danish Football even more because of it.

I recall once that Ronaldo (the real Brazilian one, not the Portuguese imposter) intentionally fired a penalty shot way, way wide because he said he wasnt fouled in the box, he stepped on the ball and the ref got it wrong.

Brazil went on to win anyways though.

Sportsmanship means a lot and its dying. The pressure to win at all costs is overriding everything.

Whatever Henry did, it is the officials who have to make the call. He didn't steal anything from the Irish. The referee did.

I'm not a huge soccer follower, and I'm not Irish, but that is some type of new standard of blown call. At least Algeria was able to win against Egypt after being pelted by Stones on Saturday.

Feel bad for the Irish, and now this too...
Bad missed call from the ref, but Henry shouldn't be getting hung for this one. It wasn't a sportsmanlike play, and he's the first to admit that, but it's also not his job to self-officiate himself.
Even the best players do occasionally "cheat" while in play. If it didn't happen, we wouldn't need refs.

Yeah, I agree. Guys knock balls down with their hands all the time hoping to slip one past the officials, this wasn't any different. I would've done the same thing.

Henry says the match should be replayed. FIFA is saying no.

Well played by Henry, he saves some face and knows that there is absolutely no chance that FIFA goes along with it.
