Glad someone is finally doing this. BC salmon numbers have been falling drastically in the past decade and its about time someone took it seriously. DFO sure doesn't seem to. I remember in the '80s when if you went fishing you were pretty well guaranteed to fill your limit. Not so any more. Terrible mismanagement on the part of the Dept of Fisheries. Apparently they haven't learned much from the cod debacle on the east coast.
Wild-salmon advocates expressed relief Thursday after Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the federal government will stage a judicial inquiry into the collapse of sockeye salmon runs on the Fraser River......
.....Sockeye runs spawning in the Fraser drainage have been in a two-decade decline after years of spectacular abundance in the 1980s, and hit a 50-year low in summer 2009.
Demands for an inquiry escalated this fall after the Fraser River sockeye run collapsed – with only about one million fish returning to spawn when between 10 million and 13 million had been expected.
My uncle lives on Vancouver Island in the Comox area, and we went fishing on the ocean a couple summers ago. I thought it was going to be abundant, but all the salmon we caught were too small and had to be returned. That is disappointing. We really are ruining this place.
Looking at their environmental assessment process might be a good place to start.
Both the Federal and BC Provinical governments are known to leave biologists completely out of any decision making processes regarding developments in the watersheds. Not to mention the Oil and Gas commission (who grant exploration permits) is not obliged to talk to DFO regarding any exploratory projects that may damage fish habitat.

No one should really be surprosed. Over fishing kills fisheries, its not difficult to understand.

It's hardly a mystery what (who) the problem is. It has a lot more to do with sockeye being hauled out once they are upstream and being sold off by the truckload than environmental stewardship, global warming, or commercial overfishing. DFO can't do much about it, either.
