If they are anything like ASET, then the benefits as a student are minimal (though at least ASET doesnt charge students). I would presume that once you graduate, a membership to IEEE is basically like a certification. Resume padding, and very little more. Simply being a member doesnt prove competence, but it could be the difference between an interview and a PFO once HR looks at your resume.
There are companies that want such memberships for that reason.
