Default Weird Problem

So I have a .zip file I downloaded that has 429 small images on it (around 80kb) and I am trying to copy it to a flash drive so I can put these images on my digital picture frame. The frames has a 512 MB SD card and when I try to copy all of the files I get Error 1.

I figured it might be a problem with the card so I tried to copy the files onto a 1GB flash disk as well and got the same error. I formatted the disk and tried agian and the same error.

I tried to open one of the images with paint and 'save as' onto the flash drive. I get error 2 when I do that. There is space on the disk as shown in the properties. I was able to copy an image from a different location to the flash drive so it isn't full.

Anyone have any idea what is wrong? Is it something with the images? I was able to copy them from the downloaded .zip file onto my HDD of my laptop.

Thanks in advance.

File names are probably too long. Try renaming the file with a short name and copying it. If that works, you only have 428 more files to rename!

Is there a limit to the number of files you can save on a flash disk? (other than size..)

I figured that would do it.

I remember my external hard drive formatted in FAT32 while everything else on my PC is NTFS. From a 640 GB hard drive, started getting error messages saying 'Disk full' when I knew for a fact there was still 250 GB left.

Reformatted drive to NTFS, cleared the problem right up.

The issue is that FAT formatted drives are restricted to the number of files (not directories) that you can have in the root directory. I can't remember the number, but its pretty low.

Pretty obscure trivia these days, since everything is FAT32, but it was occasionally an issue in the good old 3.3 days....the DOS 3.3 days, that is.

The FAT limit in the root folder is 512 entries. The trouble arises when you have "long filenames" because those use up 2 or 3 entries depending on length.

One simple workaround if you can't/won't reformat is to create a directory and copy your files there instead of storing files in the Root.
