Default TV show music

Anyone know of a good resource for discovering songs played on certain episodes of specific TV shows? I'm not talking about theme music or background music. Many times episodes will have good sized chunks of a song and that song is rarely, if ever, mentioned in the credits. Heard one tonight and I need to find out about it.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Depends on the show. If it has a website, visit it; a lot of the time they will list the songs used in different episodes. The old WB was famous for this - they used their shows' soundtracks to kickstart the careers of artists they had just signed to record labels.

Usually, if you remember a line word for word, just google it with quotes and it usually brings it up.

Criminal Minds.

My wife wiped the DVR before I had the chance to write down a few lines...so google wasn't an option this time. Google is how I found a few songs from The Shield that generated CD purchases.

Thanks for the help guys.

There's an iPhone app that can tell you the title and artist of songs it hears.

This was apparently on Grey's Anatomy. Im not a fan of the show myself but the number of views of this video goes to show how the medium is able to showcase music.

Patrick Watson is pretty great for those of you into good music.

This is an interest of mine too. Especially the HBO and Showtime series. They usually have great music that I end up purchasing too.

Besides the official sites for the shows, I use Epguides.com
( http://epguides.com/CriminalMinds/ ) or TV.com or IMDB.com.

That's where I found a message board post talking about the song over the end credits of last night's episode---Patterson Hood's "Heavy and Hanging."

I have two strategies for this. If I have the song playing Shazam on my iPhone will usually find it. If I don't have the song available (or shazam fails) chances are somebody has asked the question on twitter. This is what a twitter search on "criminal minds song" came up with:

The season opener of House this year was a goldmine of music. I bought two albums just based off two songs that were playing. I managed to find them via twitter.

I was pretty sure it was Driveby Truckers. I will be picking up that record.

I have at least a half dozen CD's that were purchased as a direct result of hearing something for the first time on a TV show. Not always new music either.

Thanks Windom!

On that note I was reading today that Kiss was expecting to be #1 on billboard for the first time ever and then Michael Buble went on Oprah and bumped up his release date to this week and wiped out their #1...I guess there is a market for everything

That was it? Awesome.

I confess I didn't know Patterson Hood was the guy from Drive-By Truckers until I looked this song up.
I think I might be picking up this CD too.

Since our album draft (hmmm, need to start working on my idea for another music draft) I've become a fan of Drive-by Truckers. I only have one release, but it's been enough so far!

...and 2 days later I'm the proud owner of Patterson Hood's Murdering Oscar and other Love Songs which completely lives up to the awesomeness that was the 60 seconds I heard on Criminal Minds Wednesday night.
