Question Where to buy carpet?

The time has come to start looking at carpet for the basement. I found a couple of old threads that didn't have much info, so I thought I'd start a new one to see if anybody has any experiences to share.

Total I'm looking at is about 32 square yards. Looked at Deerfoot Carpet and they seem OK. $20/yd for the carpet, $6/yd for the underlay, $240 for the basic install and another ~$250 for the stairs.

I'd like something decent, but doesn't have to the best. And of course price is a consideration.

I'd recommend Centura Floor and Carpeting.

BUMP!

ken, how did your carpet install go? I went to End of the Roll, their install prices were very expensive.

I hear a group of "carpet sales women" recently took the issue of them being able to sell carpet to court.

I would wait on that decision before proceeding personally.

I had it installed by Deerfoot carpet. Prices were pretty much what I said above. It looks like they had a few different carpets that were inexpensive and still good quality. Looking around I found the same thing as you did Shazam- most places were around the same, and installation often was a deal breaker.

Their installer did an excellent job. You can't really see the one seam that is in the carpet, and the stairs came out really well.

My only complaint is that they tried to order waaaaaay too much carpet for the job. The installer first measured and came up with 34 square yards, whereas my measurements had put it at 24 square yards. We almost walked, and so they send the installer out. He was complaining about how it was going to be tough, and came back with 28 square yards. At the end of the job there were 3 good size pieces totalling about 4-5 square yards, plus a few others at about 3-4 square feet. (9 sq feet in a sq yard by the way.)

Yes, they can only cut the carpet a cetain way, but my arguement was the other pieces could have been used on the steps, as it doesn't matter if there were seams.

So I would use them again, but next time I would insist on getting a more accurate measurement.
